{"id":220994,"date":"2026-01-07T07:13:03","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T07:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/220994\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T07:13:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T07:13:03","slug":"australias-inflation-slows-to-3-4-easing-fears-of-a-february-interest-rate-hike-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/220994\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia\u2019s inflation slows to 3.4%, easing fears of a February interest rate hike | Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Inflation has fallen further than expected but remains high, with economists saying interest rate hikes will probably be delayed but remain on the table.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Consumer prices rose 3.4% in the year to November, below the 3.6% markets had expected, Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Inflation had surged to 3.8% in the year to October, prompting Commonwealth Bank and NAB economists to predict the Reserve Bank would hike interest rates in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trading immediately after the surprise inflation fall signalled greater confidence rates would stay lower for longer, with the Australian dollar slipping from 67.38 US cents to 67.24 and the ASX200 jumping from 8,700 to 8,734 index points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Financial markets were betting there was a two-thirds chance rates would stay on hold when the RBA\u2019s interest-rate setting board met in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Markets expect a hike to come by June, with a strong chance of a second before December. On Wednesday, NAB economists continued to predict a hike in February and in May.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/oD1q1\/1\/\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019s inflation dips after bouncing back<\/a>Australia\u2019s inflation dips after bouncing back. Monthly CPI data began being calculated using a different method in April 2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Stephen Smith, partner at Deloitte Access Economics, said a hike in February would be premature as it was not clear why inflation had resurged in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAny policy response should be careful and cautious, rather than impulsive,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">ANZ economists predicted the RBA would face a \u201cclose decision\u201d but leave rates on hold, as they pointed to some categories reversing their past price increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Retailers offered big discounts amid Black Friday sales, sending clothing and footwear prices down 3.1% from October to November and furniture prices down 4.6%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Domestic holiday prices fell 4.1% in the month while international holiday prices unexpectedly slipped 0.6%, suggesting prices in parts of the inflation basket were easing, Diana Mousina, an AMP economist said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIt\u2019s good to see we are getting this moderation and the surprising price increase we have had in the past few months \u2026 could just be one-offs,\u201d Mousina said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health<\/a> costs also slipped 0.5% from October to November. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2025\/nov\/04\/australia-medicare-bulk-billing-scheme-gp-reaction\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bulk-billing incentives were expanded<\/a> on 1 November 2025, boosting bulk-billing rates and cutting households\u2019 out-of-pocket doctor costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Persistent price rises in other key categories saw some economists warn rate rises would still be needed in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Housing costs overall jumped 1.1% between October and November.
