Her mood instantly changed to one of excitement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Jumping across the lens of a motion-activated camera was the distinctive shape of an endangered<a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/aussie-inventors-valuable-secret-hidden-beneath-pile-of-rocks-in-outback-053820208.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:northern quoll;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> northern quoll<\/a>, a cat-sized marsupial predator that hadn\u2019t been documented in the area for 80 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Located in Far North <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/qld\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Queensland;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a>, the sanctuary is owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) and The Tony &amp; Lisette Lewis Foundation, and is home to other threatened species, including <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/aussie-housing-developers-deeply-embarrassing-destruction-of-ancient-forest-sparks-global-condemnation-035027194.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:black-footed tree rats;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black-footed tree rats<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/incredible-moment-rare-animal-returns-to-aussie-bushland-for-first-time-in-150-years-051548168.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:banidcoots;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banidcoots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Previous surveys of the 164,850-hectare Piccaninny Plains Wildlife Sanctuary over the last 17 years had failed to locate the species, despite the team using targeted camera deployments in 2015, 2021 and 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although a sighting at a neighbouring sanctuary in 2017 by Indigenous rangers had given the team some hope, numbers across Australia have been spiralling downwards.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A northern quoll sitting on a rocky outcrop, captured on a motion sensor camera.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/3a2edf70-eaa1-11f0-b77e-248ea10b449a.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A northern quoll sitting on a rocky outcrop at the sanctuary. Source: AWC<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In their search for quolls, the sanctuary manager had choppered over a remote location they\u2019d neglected to survey before, then set up camera traps around an isolated rocky outcrop surrounded by savannah woodland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s more than 10km from the last known record,\u201d Dr Stokes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s possible it was there all along, and possible it\u2019s come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Future of quolls threatened by invasive species<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Despite efforts to manage invasive species, cane toads are known to have infiltrated the area, as they <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/bigger-to-come-grim-prediction-after-toadzilla-discovery-in-aussie-national-park-cane-toad-monster-010137950.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:continue to spread across the country;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continue to spread across the country<\/a> and decimate native wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The species has been identified as the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/radical-three-year-plan-to-speed-up-evolution-in-australia-as-invasive-threat-spreads-190012943.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:greatest threat to the northern quoll\u2019s survival;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greatest threat to the northern quoll\u2019s survival<\/a>, because despite being the perfect prey size, they have glands behind their eardrums that ooze deadly poison when disturbed.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A northern quoll at an AWC sanctuary.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/f1b32890-eaa1-11f0-bfde-b5619b709842.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Cane toads are the greatest threat to the survival of northern quolls. Source: Brad Leue<\/p>\n<p>Hunt for more quolls set to begin<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">AWC believes the animal is likely a male, and it plans to set up more cameras around the area to ascertain whether it was an individual passing through or whether there is an established population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThis record gives us a roadmap,\u201d Dr Stokes said earlier in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe now have a clear starting point for future surveys and research.
