When the trailer for Survivor<\/a> 50 dropped, fans were immediately confused by what they saw. The season was supposed to be \u201cIn the Hands of the Fans.\u201d With that in mind, folks were confused to see the inclusion of random celebrities. Of course, Jeff Probst<\/a> has an explanation.<\/p>\n

Jeff is understandably defending the likes of MrBeast and Jimmy Fallon appearing on Survivor 50<\/p>\n

The decision to include celebrities in Survivor 50<\/a> received feedback from fans and former players alike. Why waste an iconic season<\/a> by throwing in random twists, like whatever a Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol is? In a new interview with Variety<\/a>, Jeff explained the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we committed to turning the game design over to the fans, the next question became: \u2018How far can we go with this idea!?\u2019\u201d Jeff said. \u201cWe knew some of Survivor\u2018s biggest fans happen to be celebrities, so we thought sprinkling a few of them in with their own unique twists felt like a fun way to make the game even more unpredictable!\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got to appreciate Jeff\u2019s ability to stand ten toes down<\/a> in every decision they make on Survivor. This man refuses to fold, and he went on to explain how the twist \u201ccaught the players off guard.\u201d However, he said it \u201cadded another layer\u201d to the game that felt important for the landmark season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a legitimate concern when you start adding layers like celebrities, that they can overshadow the game and take it off course,\u201d Jeff added. \u201cOur job was to make sure that we stayed true to what we\u2019re doing on Survivor, which is exploring this continuous social experiment. And now we\u2019re adding another layer.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Jeff, some of these celebrities we\u2019ll see on Survivor 50<\/a> actually pitched themselves. It should come as no surprise that Jimmy Fallon<\/a> was one of them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Jimmy Fallon, it was on his show. Jimmy texts me ideas all the time about Survivor, and we put some of them in the show, and we\u2019ve always talked about this idea,\u201d Jeff recalled.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI think people will see, when they see these play out, I think they\u2019ll understand these are legit Survivor fans who wanted to be a part of 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

Survivor<\/a> 50 premieres on CBS on Wednesday, February 25 at 8\/7c.<\/p>\n
