{"id":222332,"date":"2026-01-08T00:18:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T00:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/222332\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T00:18:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T00:18:06","slug":"john-langdon-innovative-and-award-winning-graphic-designer-has-died-at-79","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/222332\/","title":{"rendered":"John Langdon, innovative and award-winning graphic designer, has died at 79"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">John Langdon, 79, formerly of Philadelphia, innovative award-winning graphic designer, painter, writer, and longtime adjunct professor of typography at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/drexel-university\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drexel University<\/a>, died Thursday, Jan. 1, of complications from a heart attack at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Mr. Langdon <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/john-langdon-8365b716\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/john-langdon-8365b716\/\">was a lifelong artist and wordsmith<\/a>. He originated ambigrams in the early 1970s and created distinctive logos for corporate clients, artists, musicians, and others. Ambigrams are words or designs that retain meaning when viewed from different perspectives, and his work influenced countless other designers and typographers who followed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cThey also present familiar concepts in an unfamiliar way,\u201d he told The Inquirer in 1992, \u201cand thus stimulate the reader\u2019s imagination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On his website, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/\">johnlangdon.net<\/a>, Mr. Langdon described his work as \u201cmaking abstract concepts visual, almost always through the design of words, letters, and symbols.\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/biography\/\">He called it<\/a> \u201cwords as art\u201d and said: \u201cI specialize in the visual presentation of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">His <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/artist-cv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/artist-cv\/\">designs were featured<\/a> in more than a dozen solo shows in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/westphal\/news-events\/news\/2006\/May\/2006-05-23_Professor_John_Langdon_Exhibit_in_Rincliffe_and_Drexel_Picture_Galleries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/drexel.edu\/westphal\/news-events\/news\/2006\/May\/2006-05-23_Professor_John_Langdon_Exhibit_in_Rincliffe_and_Drexel_Picture_Galleries\/\">galleries<\/a> and museums in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Delaware, and in more than 50 group exhibitions around the country and Europe. He also wrote the forwards of other books and articles for journals and newsletters. He said he had a \u201cparticular interest in word origins\u201d in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/interview\/\">an interview<\/a> on his website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He was featured several times in The Inquirer and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/opinion\/inquirer\/20140715_What_s_in_a_logo__More_than_meets_the_eye.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/philly\/opinion\/inquirer\/20140715_What_s_in_a_logo__More_than_meets_the_eye.html\">wrote an op-ed piece<\/a> in 2014 about the Philadelphia Museum of Art\u2019s new logo. He opened the article with: \u201cPlease, beloved Philadelphia Museum of Art, before you print one piece of stationery or a single promotional flier, reconsider your new logo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In 1996, he began painting what he called his \u201cvisual-verbal meditations and manipulations\u201d on canvas. \u201cMy paintings still involve symmetry and illusion, a bit of philosophy, and a few puns thrown in for good measure,\u201d he <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/biography\/\">said on his website<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He cocreated the Flexion typeface and won a 2007 award from the New York-based Type Directors Club. He spoke often about design at colleges and high schools, and to professional societies. He gave a TEDx talk about font and the future of typeface at Drexel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Douglas Hofstadter, a professor at Indiana University who coined the term ambigram in 1984, told The Inquirer in 2006 that Mr. Langdon had a \u201cvery strong sense of legibility but also a marvelous sense of esthetics, flow, and elegance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmbiguity makes people uncomfortable. But the lesson of Taoism is that if you have only one vantage point, you\u2019re not seeing the truth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mr. Langdon to The Inquirer in 2006<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Born in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/wynnewood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wynnewood<\/a> and reared in <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/narberth\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Narberth<\/a>, Mr. Langdon graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1964 and earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in English at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. He worked in the photo-lettering department of a type house and for a design studio in Philadelphia after college, and began freelancing as a logo designer, type specialist, and lettering artist in 1977.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He taught typography and logo design classes at Moore College of Art and Design from 1985 to 1988 and at Drexel from 1988 to his retirement in 2015. In <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giantleapscreative.com\/glc-blog\/2016\/4\/14\/ppy4w7vmln39m6zg2olqiya7ok0988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.giantleapscreative.com\/glc-blog\/2016\/4\/14\/ppy4w7vmln39m6zg2olqiya7ok0988\">an online tribute<\/a>, one student said he was \u201cone of my favorite teachers of all time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">He was interested in Taoism and inspired by artists Salvador Dal\u00ed and M.C. Escher, and authors Edgar Allan Poe and Ogden Nash. \u201cIn the early \u201970s, I tried to do with words what Dali and Escher did with images,\u201d he <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/cracking-the-davinci-code-browns-protagonist-named-for-drexel-professor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/cracking-the-davinci-code-browns-protagonist-named-for-drexel-professor\">said in a 2006 interview<\/a> posted on Newswise.com. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.johnlangdon.net\/\">John Wilbur Langdon<\/a> was born April 19, 1946. He played high school and college soccer and drew caricatures of classmates for the Episcopal yearbook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome words almost beg to be ambigrams. Some words may look daunting and then yield to my coercion with little resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Langdon in his book &#8220;Wordplay&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">After college, he took painting and drawing classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the old Philadelphia College of Art. He married Lynn Ochsenreiter, and they had a daughter, Jessica. They divorced later. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Mr. Langdon enjoyed vacation road trips and told stories of hitchhiking around the country in the 1960s.
