A lot of people use their phones to pay at the grocery store, at the gas station with a tap, so it\u2019s the same idea, it\u2019s contactless identity verification because it\u2019s right there in the palm of your hand,\u201d said Naitore Djigbenou, KYTC\u2019s public affairs director.<\/p>\n<p>Enhanced privacy and airport convenience<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Djigbenou said the digital ID can be particularly useful for air travel, comparing it to digital boarding passes that have become popular with travelers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cSo very similar to the way a lot of people prefer these days to having a digital boarding pass instead of printing off a physical one just to make it easier to pass through airport security checkpoints,\u201d Djigbenou said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The digital format also creates more privacy by allowing users to share only relevant information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have to share personal information that\u2019s not relevant, like your address for example when someone, all they need to know is your age to sell you something,\u201d Djigbenou said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link | text-reset d-block h-100 w-100\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wkyt.com\/page\/wkyt-apps-for-ios-and-android-devices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"WKYT Streaming Apps\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MEPHTWNVMREWLEQQWWFJM27ZMA.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a>Physical ID still required in some situations<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The digital ID does not replace the need for a physical ID card in certain circumstances. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Richmond Police Chief Rodney Richardson said drivers are required by law to carry their physical driver\u2019s license while operating a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cSo you got situations where you might be pulled over, you got situations where you might\u2019ve been involved in a collision, and those are times when you have to have your physical ID present,\u201d Richardson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kentucky Mobile ID is free to download through the App Store or Google Play. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A Real ID is required to fly or visit military bases. Some Kentucky airports are not yet accepting the digital versions, so travelers should verify acceptance at their departure location ahead of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WKYT.
