{"id":223490,"date":"2026-01-08T16:24:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:24:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/223490\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T16:24:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T16:24:12","slug":"humans-were-built-to-walk-a-doctor-explains-why-we-all-need-low-intensity-movement-and-balance-work-to-live-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/223490\/","title":{"rendered":"Humans were built to walk\u2014a doctor explains why we all need low-intensity movement and balance work to live longer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"eb928bb0-13d7-4e02-9a20-2d638331fdfc\">It\u2019s common knowledge that walking is good for you, but did you know it might also help you live longer?<\/p>\n<p>According to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drkaranrajan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.drkaranrajan.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr Karan Rajan<\/a>, a doctor, author and health educator, looking to cultures where long life is the norm could offer us some longevity secrets.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"eb928bb0-13d7-4e02-9a20-2d638331fdfc-2\">\u201cThey&#8217;re just walking around a lot of the time, going to the shops, walking upstairs, chatting with friends, gardening, foraging,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>This low-intensity, regular movement helps keep our heart, joints, bones and muscles healthy.<\/p>\n<p>And Rajan says that doing lots of walking is better than only occasionally hitting the gym.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow intensity, low-stress movement is better than doing high intensity exercise for half an hour and then lying on a sofa the rest of the day,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-how-to-increase-your-step-count\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How to increase your step count<\/p>\n<p id=\"6d8ed2d0-c05d-48c6-a50a-9969361cb274\">If your step count is only in triple digits at the end of the day, Rajan suggests increasing it by 500-1,000 steps at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny incremental increase in your step count above your baseline is beneficial. So if you did 7,000 steps versus 12,000, there\u2019s a marginal, negligible difference to the amount of benefits that you\u2019re going to reap from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-how-can-we-keep-walking-well-into-older-age\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>How can we keep walking well into older age?<\/p>\n<p id=\"27914e74-171d-49ce-b611-16e9de5b751a\">Walking is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy as you age\u2014but there are other ways to boost your healthspan, too.<\/p>\n<p>Rajan says it&#8217;s important to work on your balance as you age, by maintaining your muscles and spatial awareness (proprioception).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoss of proprioception with age is not uncommon, and it can lead to an increased risk of falls and falls can be fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He advises strength training to mitigate against muscle loss.
