{"id":22434,"date":"2025-09-14T20:23:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/22434\/"},"modified":"2025-09-14T20:23:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-14T20:23:08","slug":"nzs-tiniest-english-pub-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/22434\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ&#8217;s tiniest English pub for sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211; The Brantwood Arms and Trott&#8217;s Garden in Ashburton are for sale by Rob and Janene Riedstra.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The Riedstras transformed the property into a successful hospitality and events venue after buying it in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; They are selling to move closer to family, having invested over $500,000 in upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s arguably New Zealand&#8217;s smallest commercial pub, and it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneroof.co.nz\/property\/canterbury\/allenton\/371-racecourse-road\/tJtxK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">up for grabs<\/a> &#8211; along with a 4.05ha national treasure.<\/p>\n<p>The Brantwood Arms, a traditional English-style boozer in miniature, is the creation of Rob and Janene Riedstra.<\/p>\n<p>They launched it after buying the internationally acclaimed <a href=\"https:\/\/trotts.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trott&#8217;s Garden<\/a> in 2023 for $1.35 million.<\/p>\n<p>The couple have poured their hearts and souls into the 4ha treasure in Allenton, Ashburton, but they have decided to sell up and head back to the North Island so they can be closer to their new grandchild.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Brantwood Arms can be found inside the internationally recognised Trott's Garden. It&#8217;s just finding someone keen on Rawene&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They gave the 109-year-old chapel a makeover, revamped the marquee, and upgraded the commercial kitchen. A retro 1950s caravan they bought from Christchurch is now Bertie at Brantwood, their ice cream and lolly store, while the Brantwood Arms \u2013 believed to be the country\u2019s smallest with a liquor licence \u2013 has been a welcome addition for thirsty punters (it also serves pub nosh). <\/p>\n<p>Rob said the business had kept them busier than they expected. \u201cWe didn\u2019t realise it would be as big a thing as it turned out to be,\u201d he told OneRoof.<\/p>\n<p>The gardens have hosted countless weddings, funerals, birthday parties, reunions and corporate events and welcomed visitors from all over the world, including South Africa, Czech Republic, Taiwan, US, Singapore, China, Ireland, Oman and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Brantwood Arms can be found inside the internationally recognised Trott's Garden. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe list is huge, and I actually keep a record of where all the visitors come from,\u201d Rob told OneRoof.<\/p>\n<p>Janene has taken over the role of function coordinator and cook, while Rob is the duty manager and helps out in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Garden tours are run by none other than the property\u2019s namesake, Alan Trott.<\/p>\n<p>After buying Trott\u2019s Garden, Rob and Janene invited Alan and his wife Catherine over for a cup of tea.<\/p>\n<p>The Riedstras reached out to the Trotts when they bought the property, inviting them round for tea. They kept in touch and invited Alan \u2013 who knows the gardens inside and out \u2013 to help them out by showing visitors around. <\/p>\n<p>Rob said Alan&#8217;s presence was great as visitors got to learn about the gardens from the person who established them (they also pose for photos with him and often buy his books).<\/p>\n<p>Rob believes the property would suit another couple looking for a home and business or an extended family looking to run something together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only do you live in paradise because you live onsite in the house.\u201d The four-bedroom, one-bathroom original farmhouse is the primary residence and was built in 1910.<\/p>\n<p>Ashburton was also a great place to live, he said, adding that a lot of the farming businesses had supported the gardens and held functions there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people are fantastic and the neighbours are great. We are very reluctant, but we feel we have to do this because it\u2019s the right thing for our family. So we are motivated by that but reluctant at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand Sotheby&#8217;s International Realty listing agent Joe Laing said the property was a one-off. &#8220;It&#8217;s a super interesting property. It&#8217;s cute, with the small pub and the chapel.
