{"id":226387,"date":"2026-01-10T07:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T07:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/226387\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T07:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T07:32:09","slug":"sunlive-tauranga-woman-falls-from-boot-of-moving-car","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/226387\/","title":{"rendered":"SunLive &#8211; Tauranga woman falls from boot of moving car"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Tauranga woman has suffered a brain bleed after falling from the boot of a moving car that two children were \u201cbonnet surfing\u201d on, police allege.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d incident has prompted a warning from the city\u2019s road policing manager.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter said about 6.10pm on Tuesday, the car was at the end of Faulkner St in Gate Pa with a driver and at least three other people.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter alleged two children were lying on the bonnet as the car headed up the street.<\/p>\n<p>When the car stopped, the woman opened the boot and hopped in.<\/p>\n<p>As the car continued, the woman \u201cfell from the boot and struck her head on the roadway\u201d, Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe car stopped, the injured woman was put into the car and taken to Tauranga Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter alleged no one called the police or an ambulance, and the police were alerted by the hospital that a woman had suffered a serious head injury.<\/p>\n<p>He said the incident was \u201cpartly captured\u201d on a Tauranga City Council CCTV camera.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the male alleged driver from the incident was at the hospital when the police arrived, and the car was in the hospital car park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an act of stupidity, which could easily have ended in more serious injuries to the woman and the two children or resulted in someone being killed,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Head of Western Bay of Plenty road policing, Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter. Photo \/ File<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the injured woman was admitted to the hospital\u2019s intensive care unit with a brain bleed, and he understood she had undergone surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient is not going to die, but it is not known how long she is expected to remain in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the behaviour was \u201cextremely dangerous\u201d as the woman could have been run over by another vehicle, and anything could have happened to the two children allegedly \u201cbonnet surfing\u201d on the car.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said police enquiries were ongoing, and the driver could face serious charges.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has witnessed the Gate Pa incident or had information that could assist the police should call 105 police, quoting file reference 26016\/5153, or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.<\/p>\n<p>Other incidents on Tauranga roads over the holiday period included a local teenager allegedly clocked doing 196 km\/h on a motorbike on the Tauranga Eastern Link near Bruce Rd &#8211; almost twice the 100km\/h limit.<\/p>\n<p>Hunter said the teen\u2019s motorbike was impounded for 28 days after the New Year\u2019s Day incident and he would face yet-to-be determined charges.<\/p>\n<p>Discover more<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/sandra-conchie\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sandra Conchie<\/a>\u00a0is a senior journalist at the\u00a0Bay of Plenty Times\u00a0and\u00a0Rotorua Daily Post who has been a journalist for 25 years.
