{"id":227183,"date":"2026-01-10T20:27:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T20:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/227183\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T20:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T20:27:12","slug":"watch-spacex-launch-nasas-pandora-exoplanet-studying-satellite-on-jan-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/227183\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch SpaceX launch NASA&#8217;s Pandora exoplanet-studying satellite on Jan. 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"76ff2300-8f01-444b-941d-bbe28becf7dd\">SpaceX will launch NASA&#8217;s next exoplanet mission on Sunday morning (Jan. 11), and you can watch the action live.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket carrying about 40 payloads, including NASA&#8217;s Pandora <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanet<\/a> satellite, is scheduled to lift off from California&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34147-vandenberg-air-force-base.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34147-vandenberg-air-force-base.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vandenberg Space Force Base<\/a> during a 57-minute window that opens at 8:19 a.m. EST (1319 GMT and 5:19 a.m. local California time).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"76ff2300-8f01-444b-941d-bbe28becf7dd-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">You can watch it live via <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/twilight\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/twilight\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SpaceX&#8217;s website<\/a> or X account; coverage will begin about 15 minutes before launch.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"d20ab98d-5257-448f-9479-92229a2807e0\">During its yearlong orbital mission, the 716-pound (325 kilograms) Pandora will study at least 20 known exoplanets using a 17-inch-wide (45 centimeters) telescope, which it will train on the worlds as they &#8220;transit,&#8221; or cross the face of, their host stars from the satellite&#8217;s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Such transits cause a small dip in the host star&#8217;s brightness, which exoplanet hunters have used to great advantage: Most of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\/weve-officially-found-6-000-exoplanets-nasa-says-were-entering-the-next-great-chapter-of-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\/weve-officially-found-6-000-exoplanets-nasa-says-were-entering-the-next-great-chapter-of-exploration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than 6,000 alien planets<\/a> we know of have been discovered via the &#8220;transit method.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Transits also allow astronomers to characterize known exoplanets, especially their atmospheres. Different elements and molecules absorb light at specific wavelengths, so studying the spectrum of starlight that has passed through an atmosphere can <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/beyond-the-habitable-zone-exoplanet-atmospheres-are-the-next-clue-to-finding-life-on-planets-orbiting-distant-stars\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/search-for-life\/beyond-the-habitable-zone-exoplanet-atmospheres-are-the-next-clue-to-finding-life-on-planets-orbiting-distant-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reveal a great deal about that atmosphere&#8217;s composition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, such work is complicated by stellar complexity. Star surfaces are not uniform; they often feature patches of varying brightness, like the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sunspots<\/a> that speckle our own star. Among them are 10 of Kepler Communications&#8217; Aether spacecraft and two of Capella Space&#8217;s advanced new <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-capella-space-radar-satellite-launch-august-2024\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-capella-space-radar-satellite-launch-august-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Acadia<\/a> Earth-imaging radar satellites.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX is no stranger to rideshare missions like Twilight. To date, the company has launched 15 such flights in its Transporter series and four via a different program known as Bandwagon.<\/p>\n<p>Twilight will mark the fifth liftoff for this particular Falcon 9&#8217;s first stage.
