{"id":227273,"date":"2026-01-10T21:39:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T21:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/227273\/"},"modified":"2026-01-10T21:39:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-10T21:39:08","slug":"iranian-cultural-figures-condemn-internet-blackout-as-blatant-tool-of-repression-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/227273\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian cultural figures condemn internet blackout as \u2018blatant tool of repression\u2019 | Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Iranian film-makers Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof have condemned the internet blackout in their country as a \u201cblatant tool of repression\u201d intended to conceal violence against protesters, amid an outpouring of solidarity from artists in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Panahi, a Palme d\u2019Or-winning film-maker who the Iranian regime sentenced last month in absentia to a year in prison for \u201cpropaganda activities\u201d, and Rasoulof, a prominent film-maker who fled Iran in 2024 while appealing against a prison sentence and now lives in exile in Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DTUKjc7DmC9\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted a joint statement<\/a> on social media on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIn recent days, following the presence of millions of Iranians in the streets protesting against the Islamic Republic, the government has once again resorted to its most blatant tools of repression,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Jafar Panahi (left) and Mohammad Rasoulof. Photograph: Alessandro Levati\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOn the one hand, the Iranian regime has cut off communication routes inside the country \u2013 the internet, mobile phones, and landlines \u2013 severing people\u2019s ability to communicate with one another; and on the other hand, it has completely blocked all means of contact with the outside world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cExperience has shown that resorting to such measures is intended to conceal the violence inflicted during the suppression of protests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They said citizens had been left defenceless and called on the international community, human rights organisations and the media to \u201cimmediately find ways to facilitate access to vital information in Iran by enabling communication platforms, and monitor what is happening in Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The fortnight of unrest and growing signs of escalating violence against protesters has prompted many other leading voices of the Iranian diaspora to speak out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Many have begun using the hashtag #IranianRevolution and #IranianRevolution2026 to highlight the scale and impact of the protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Iranian-born, UK-based artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/soheila_sokhanvari_\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Soheila Sokhanvari<\/a>, renowned for her portraits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/gallery\/2022\/sep\/24\/a-vibrant-celebration-of-iranian-rebel-women-in-pictures\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iranian rebel women<\/a>, posted on social media: \u201cInnocent unarmed people are subjected to brutal force and live bullets with impunity in Iran. Photograph: Lia Toby\/Getty Images for Barbican Centre<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">She said international reporting on the protests despite the blackout would enable \u201cthe Iranian people who are risking their lives for their freedom [to] feel supported and not feel their sacrifice will be in silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAlso it will tell the Iranian regime that the world is watching and their atrocities will not go unpunished,\u201d she said. \u201cThe Islamic Republic has proven repeatedly that Iranian lives means nothing to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTAVIstjJ2a\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram<\/a>, Golshifteh Farahani, who in 2008 became the first Iran-based actor to have a role in a Hollywood film since the 1979 revolution, appearing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Ridley Scott\u2019s CIA thriller <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/film\/movie\/126190\/body.of.lies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Body of Lies<\/a>, praised the resistance of the Iranian people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIran is on fire once again. My heart beats with the people of Iran,\u201d wrote Farahani, who now lives in exile after refusing to wear a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hijab\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hijab<\/a> while acting in international films.<\/p>\n<p>Golshifteh Farahani and Leonardo DiCaprio in Body of Lies. Photograph: PictureLux\/The Hollywood Archive\/Alamy<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The British comedian Omid Djalili, who is of Iranian descent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DTSh9NciBec\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told The News Agents<\/a> he was trying to amplify the voices of the people of Iran as much as he can. \u201cWe are seeing videos of security forces shooting at them &#8230; but a lot of the security forces are running away \u2026 you\u2019ve got 150 to 200 people chasing them. So there\u2019s been a tremendous shift.
