{"id":228987,"date":"2026-01-12T00:27:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T00:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/228987\/"},"modified":"2026-01-12T00:27:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T00:27:09","slug":"fire-burns-through-22-hectares-of-native-bush-and-pine-forest-in-hawkes-bay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/228987\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire burns through 22 hectares of native bush and pine forest in Hawke&#8217;s Bay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUX9I7_Waiatara_fire_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1400\" alt=\"The fire on Waitara Rd had burned through 22 hectares of bush.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nThe fire on Waitara Rd had burned through 22 hectares of bush.<br \/>\nPhoto: FIRE AND EMERGENCY NZ \/ SUPPLIED\n<\/p>\n<p>A fire has burned through 22 hectares of pine forest and native bush in Te Haroto, Hawke&#8217;s Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Kelly, acting district manager for Hawke&#8217;s Bay, said the fire ground consisted of 18 hectares of Pan Pac forest, and four hectares of native bush on Department of Conservation (DoC) land, north of Napier.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, 45 ground crew members, made up of firefighters and forestry workers, were fighting the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the presence of powerlines, Kelly said, a helicopter wasn&#8217;t an option, but a digger was working on creating a firebreak.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures in the region had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/national\/programmes\/morningreport\/audio\/2019019191\/hawkes-bay-hit-by-near-record-breaking-temperatures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reached the mid-30s over the weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It slowed down overnight with the weather cooling a wee bit, which was really good,&#8221; Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>But it remained quite windy, and FENZ was analysing weather forecasts for the next few days to plan their approach.<\/p>\n<p>An emergency mobile alert (EMA) was sent out to all campers and DoC workers in the area on Sunday, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/583765\/hawke-s-bay-blaze-sparks-evacuations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one house was evacuated overnight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said the occupant had since returned home, and the EMA had been recinded &#8211; but for now, Kelly urged people to stay away from the area anyway, as it could be reinstated at any time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A wind change could just happen like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fire was not known as this stage, Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>About 40 crew members would continue work today, and Pohokura Road remained closed from the Tutira end.<\/p>\n<p>According to NZTA, nearby State Highway 5 remained open.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly Eaton, DoC&#8217;s acting operations manager for the Hawke&#8217;s Bay district, said two houses and an office which made up their base were close to the fire, but no staff or volunteers were on-site at the time the fire broke out.<\/p>\n<p>Eaton said firefighters and neighbours had checked the Bell Rock Loop Track, part of the Boundary Stream Scenic Reserve, and confirmed there were no people present there either.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fire was just 300 metres away from our predator proof fenced site on the ridge which currently hosts Cook&#8217;s petrel chicks.
