\u201cThere continues to be some uncertainty as to the precise data and individuals that may have been affected,\u201d Canopy said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn July 18, 2025, Canopy Healthcare\u202fidentified\u202fthat an unknown person temporarily obtained\u202funauthorised access to a part of our systems\u202fused by\u202four\u202fadministration\u202fteam.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn instances where some patient or staff information may have been accessed, we are contacting those individuals directly.\u201d<\/p>\n
It added: \u201cThe unauthorised party may have accessed a small number of bank account numbers, which had been provided to Canopy for payment or refund purposes. We are directly notifying potentially affected individuals.\u201d <\/p>\n
The message also said: \u201cThere have been some instances of staff identity information potentially being affected, and we have notified those staff to provide support.\u201d<\/p>\n
Canopy advised those whose passport information had been compromised could add an \u201calert\u201d to their record via the Ministry of Internal Affairs.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo credit cards were affected,\u201d it clarified.<\/p>\n
Canopy said its operations and services continued as normal.<\/p>\n
\u201cDespite rigorous investigation, we have not been able to confirm who was responsible,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo date, Canopy has not been contacted by the unauthorised party.\u201d<\/p>\n
Canopy said it notified the Privacy Commissioner and police at the time of the attack.<\/p>\n
It has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n
Canopy\u2019s public statement follows the December 30 revelation that some 127,000 patients had their medical files accessed in a ransomware breach of the ManageMyHealth portal for GPs.<\/p>\n
Security experts said they found flaws<\/a> in ManageMyHealth\u2019s technical setups, while questions have also been raised<\/a> about governance and government oversight of private providers. <\/p>\n Health Minister Simeon Brown has asked the Ministry of Health to conduct a review of the ManageMyHealth breach.<\/p>\n Brown and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner have been asked for comment on the Canopy breach.<\/p>\n Chris Keall is an Auckland-based member of the Herald\u2019s business team.
