A Kiwi diver has had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a pod of orca off the Coromandel coast.<\/p>\n

Jordy Bardin came face to face with the orca while diving in the waters near the Mercury Islands.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
In footage posted on Tuesday to her Facebook page Overboard with Jord, Bardin can be seen splashing the ocean surface as an orca swims up to her boat, coming within arm\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n
She described the \u201cinsane interaction\u201d in a post to her 18,000 followers.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThese guys actually snuck up on me while I was in the water, and I almost s*** my wetsuit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, my GoPro was flat, so I couldn\u2019t capture just how close and curious they were!<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, they were so interactive that they came and said hello once I had hopped back on the boat.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like an orca in your face to get the heart pumping!\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another commenter said they had been wary of seeing orca underwater, but \u201cwatching this has made me almost excited to see them now\u201d, they wrote.<\/p>\n

The Department of Conservation (DoC) said it had been made aware of the video after it was reported to them.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
DoC senior science adviser Anton van Helden acknowledged having a marine mammal approach a boat so closely and of its own accord, would have been a \u201cthrilling experience\u201d.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cRegardless, we do strongly discourage people from reaching out or attempting to touch wild animals like orca,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Van Helden said DoC wanted to avoid copycat behaviour because of the \u201crisk to people who try it and to the animals themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Under New Zealand law, it is illegal to touch or intentionally disturb orca or any other marine mammal.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Boats must keep at least 50m away, while swimmers and divers must remain at least 100m from the animals.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Those found in breach of the rules can face significant fines of up to $250,000.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep marine mammals and their young safe by following the right rules for the environment and species,\u201d van Helden said.<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThis will make sure you and the animals have an enjoyable experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n
<\/p>\n
Bardin wrote in a comment that she was \u201caware of the rules and regulations around cetaceans in NZ\u201d and that \u201cno contact was made\u201d.<\/p>\n

She also said the footage was taken \u201ca few years ago\u201d.<\/p>\n
