The One Battle After Another awards juggernaut was kicked fully into gear by a ceremony that produced few surprises and simply ratified Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s epic comedy thriller as an incontestable Oscar frontrunner (Kevin Maher writes). The minor twist, of course, was that DiCaprio was beaten to the best actor, musical or comedy trophy by Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet from Marty Supreme<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Both of them delivered enormous and, alas, slightly cartoonish performances in their respective movies and, in fact, fellow nominee George Clooney actually deserved the gong for his sweetly nuanced turn in Jay Kelly. But awards season voters just love to laud a loud performance, and otherwise a muscular One Battle After Another<\/a> sweep of best supporting actress, best director, best screenplay and best motion picture musical or comedy added a certain inevitability to the film\u2019s status as the most serious contender come Oscar night (on March 15). <\/p>\n

The only other eyebrow raiser was a win in the best actor drama category for the Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, from the movie The Secret Agent, an era-spanning account of life under the Brazilian military dictatorship. Moura, rightfully celebrated for a grounded turn therein, beat much admired performances from Joel Edgerton (in Train Dreams) and Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), a feat that is unlikely to be repeated elsewhere. <\/p>\n

Last year, for instance, the Golden Globes similarly gave the best actress drama trophy to the Brazilian veteran Fernanda Torres for her movie I\u2019m Still Here, also an era-spanning account of life under the Brazilian dictatorship. The Baftas and the Oscars opted instead for Mikey Madison from Anora. <\/p>\n

Hamnet<\/a>, meanwhile, upheld its modest standing as a potential challenger to One Battle After Another. The grief-themed Shakespeare tale snagged the best picture drama award and is undoubtedly a more impactful, thoughtful and, frankly, better film than DiCaprio\u2019s shaggy dog caper. But it\u2019s going to need a miracle, or some sort of scandalous upheaval on the campaign trail, to convince Bafta and Oscar voters that One Battle After Another is not the second coming of cinema. <\/p>\n

Hamnet\u2019s Jessie Buckley, however, has continued her much deserved advance towards the Oscar podium, picking up the best actress drama Golden Globe and proving that she is the closest thing that this, or any other, awards season has ever come to a done deal. Her closest rival, Rose Byrne, who is exceptional in the indie drama If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You (out in the UK next month), won the parallel best actress musical or comedy category. It is likely to remain Byrne\u2019s only major trophy. <\/p>\n

Hamnet\u2019s Paul Mescal, nonetheless, was robbed in the best supporting actor category. That went, inexplicably, to Stellan Skarsgard for his one-note turn in the smug Norwegian dirge Sentimental Value<\/a>. The Skarsgard shocker also meant nothing for his fellow nominees Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn, both from One Battle After Another. Expect a conspicuous correction, leaning towards del Toro, for the rest of the One Battle-dominated season. <\/p>\n
