Jennifer Lawrence Says You Shouldn’t Have Kids Unless You’re Sure<\/p>\n
From Oprah<\/a> to Seth Rogen<\/a>, it\u2019s always refreshing to hear public figures talk openly about why they\u2019ve chosen not to have children<\/a>. And even though Jennifer Lawrence<\/a> is a happy mom of two, she\u2019s urging people to think carefully before pursuing parenthood.<\/p>\n Jennifer is the guest on this week\u2019s episode of the<\/a> Smartless<\/a> podcast<\/a>, which is hosted by Jason Bateman<\/a>, Sean Hayes<\/a>, and Will Arnett. During the interview, the group got into a discussion about kids, which prompted Sean to talk about his child-free life.<\/p>\n Sean explained that he and his husband, Scotty, haven\u2019t had children because neither of them are absolutely sure they want them. \u201cIf he was 100%, then I\u2019d be like \u2018Great, let’s do it.\u2019 But we\u2019re both like 85%, you know?\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not fair to the kid.\u201d<\/p>\n To this, his cohost Jason suggested that the nine months of pregnancy can be \u201ca useful time for parents to kind of get their head around\u201d the idea of raising a child before it actually happens. However, Jennifer agreed with Sean that parenthood isn\u2019t something you should pursue unless you\u2019re absolutely, categorically sure it\u2019s what you want.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know. Whenever anybody tells me, \u2018I\u2019m not sure,\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Don\u2019t do it,\u2019\u201d she said, calling out the societal judgment often imposed upon child-free couples. \u201cIt\u2019s so weird that people are like, \u2018You don\u2019t have kids?!\u2019 [because] when you have a kid, you\u2019re like, \u2018What the fuck?!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Providing some insight into how hard being a parent actually is, Jen said she thinks the invasive questioning towards child-free people should be flipped around, so we’re asking people why they want kids, instead of making people justify why they don\u2019t want them.<\/p>\n \u201cIt should\u2019ve been one out of a thousand people that go \u2018OK, I think I\u2019m gonna do it,\u2019 and then everyone\u2019s like \u2018Are you sure?!\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s the way it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n Jennifer\u2019s view is similar to Seth Rogen\u2019s past observation<\/a> about the number of people who have children without really thinking about it. \u201cYou should only have kids if you really want kids,\u201d he told Esquire<\/a> in 2025. \u201cI look at my friends with kids, and honestly, I feel like some of them are incredibly happy and fulfilled, and some of them seem like maybe they wish they had put a little more thought into it. I just didn\u2019t want to be one of those people.\u201d<\/p>\n Everyone\u2019s experience is obviously different, but I\u2019ve got to agree with Jennifer and Seth on this one.
