J-Hope has jeans and a yellow t-shirt with navy jacket on, he has ginger hair. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>All seven BTS members from left to right, V, Suga, Jin, Jung Kook, RM, Jimin and J-Hope<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">After almost four years, the world&#8217;s biggest boy band are gearing up for a huge world tour and a new album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">K-pop megastars BTS went on hiatus in 2022 so all seven members could complete mandatory military service in their home country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">After reforming last summer, they&#8217;ve a new album on the way and <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c79rqzv1e7ro\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have announced a massive 79-date world tour.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It kicks off in South Korea in April and the group will perform at London&#8217;s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium across two nights on 6 and 7 July this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It&#8217;s a moment die-hard fans &#8211; known collectively as Army &#8211; have been waiting for since it was teased months ago. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ahead of the big announcement, BBC Newsbeat&#8217;s been speaking to BTS superfans about why they think the band is so special, and to an expert who&#8217;s told us how their return has been calculated for maximum hype and impact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">BTS&#8217;s previous tour, Permission to Dance on Stage, ran for 12 dates between 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">UK-based fan Ashia will be one of the people trying to get tickets for the upcoming tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She tells BBC Newsbeat she &#8220;fell in love&#8221; with BTS in 2017, and has been a superfan ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I can&#8217;t let BTS be in the UK and not be at the concert,&#8221;  she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ashia last saw the boys in London in 2018 &#8211; a year before they made history by becoming the first K-pop band to headline back-to-back shows at Wembley Stadium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Those gigs were the last time fans got a chance to see BTS live in the UK, as multiple dates on their follow-up tour were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">With extreme demand expected, Ashia says she&#8217;s &#8220;prepared to go to multiple countries if need be&#8221;, if she doesn&#8217;t secure tickets for the London gigs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Despite not having a chance to see their idols live for some time, BTS fans have had plenty to keep them going in the meantime.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768164255_364_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/11ccfa80-eae2-11f0-97ff-1df4f0d33d7f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Ashia Davies Ashia is wearing a black top with a black and blue scarf. She has dark curly hair and brown eyes and glasses. \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Ashia Davies<\/p>\n<p>K-pop fan Ashia says she fell in love with BTS in 2018 and has been ARMY ever since<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">On first glance, it could look as if BTS&#8217;s hiatus has diminished interest in the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">According to stats shared by Spotify, global streams of their music dropped by 24% in 2023, and 30% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">They remained steady in 2025, and the streaming platform says it expects numbers to explode in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But what the numbers don&#8217;t show is the way BTS&#8217;s absence due to military service was carefully managed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Rather than a drought, says Dr Felicity Davies, it meant there was a drip-feed of material during the band&#8217;s hiatus, from solo projects and tours, to live streams from individual members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Dr Felicity, who did her PhD on South Korean culture, tells Newsbeat the requirement for military service is &#8220;well-established&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Fans know of it very well. They&#8217;re preparing for it,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Although all South Korean men must do military service between the ages of 18 and 28, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-55147970\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the government actually changed the law to allow K-pop stars to delay theirs until age 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">With BTS, each member staggered their about 20-month stints to minimise the periods when all seven members were missing from action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">And even though streams for the full band declined, some of their solo projects were hugely successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Singer <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/newsbeat-66256744\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jung Kook&#8217;s debut single Seven<\/a> broke a streaming record, surpassing 2.5 billion streams, with his total solo output hitting more than 9 billion.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768164255_364_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ecb978b0-eadf-11f0-97ff-1df4f0d33d7f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Getty Images RM, Kim Namjoon is wearing his military uniform and sunglasses, he is playing the saxophone. V, Kim Tae-hyung, is looking at RM, also clad in military uniform, holding two bouquets of purple and pink flowers.  \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>BTS leader RM (left)  and V (right) returned from their military service in  June 2025 <\/p>\n<p>Will the K-pop bubble burst? <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">BTS&#8217;s comeback is a big deal for fans, but also a huge moment for South Korea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The band was a key part of a <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/culture\/article\/20200309-the-soft-power-roots-of-k-pop\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">phenomenon known as Hallyu<\/a>, which describes South Korean pop culture crossing over to the west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It&#8217;s included skincare products, dramas such as Squid Game and other K-pop bands dominating our feeds and For You pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Felicity says there have been fears for a while now that the &#8220;bubble would burst&#8221; and K-pop&#8217;s global influence would start to decline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">She says the band&#8217;s 2019 Wembley performance was &#8220;the moment &#8211; now we&#8217;re going to see the downfall of Hallyu&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But Korean culture keeps proving her wrong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Just when she thinks things have reached a peak, Felicity says &#8220;something will come along&#8221; to give K-pop &#8220;this whole new lens and lease of life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/culture\/article\/20250715-the-animated-k-pop-film-that-swept-the-world\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">K-Pop Demon Hunters<\/a>, which won a Golden Globe this week, was 2025&#8217;s success story, and it&#8217;s likely BTS will rule 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">But do fans think they&#8217;ve still got what it takes?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768164255_364_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/050de0f0-eaf8-11f0-8e8e-7f477e15473f.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Lauryn Adene Lauryn is wearing a brown cowboy hat, she has brown long wavy hair.
