{"id":231775,"date":"2026-01-14T00:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-14T00:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/231775\/"},"modified":"2026-01-14T00:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T00:32:11","slug":"job-numbers-edge-up-in-november-but-still-down-on-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/231775\/","title":{"rendered":"Job numbers edge up in November, but still down on last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JVA3J2_anu_priya_7lDVD9K7l8A_unsplash_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"617\" alt=\"An illustration of several people sitting down in suits with one in the middle wearing bright-coloured clothing.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nStats NZ&#8217;s found seasonally adjusted filled jobs rose by 0.3 percent.<br \/>\nPhoto: Unsplash \/ Anu Priya\n<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand&#8217;s job market showed a small lift in November, but overall employment remains weaker than a year ago, new figures show.<\/p>\n<p>Stats NZ&#8217;s latest Employment Indicators report found seasonally adjusted filled jobs rose by 0.3 percent (6569 jobs) in November versus October, bringing the total to 2.35 million.<\/p>\n<p>Primary industries led the job increase, up 0.8 percent, while goods-producing industries rose 0.1 percent and services gained 0.2 percent.<\/p>\n<p>But compared with November 2024, the number of actual filled jobs fell 0.4 percent (9113 jobs).<\/p>\n<p>The biggest annual changes were:<\/p>\n<p>Construction &#8211; down 3.6 percent (7,172 jobs)<br \/>\nProfessional, scientific &amp; technical services &#8211; down 2.2 percent (4,198 jobs)<br \/>\nManufacturing &#8211; down 1.6 percent (3,820 jobs)<br \/>\nHealth care &amp; social assistance &#8211; up 1.8 percent (4,995 jobs)<br \/>\nPublic administration &amp; safety &#8211; up 2.1 percent (3,471 jobs).<\/p>\n<p>Compared with November 2024, Auckland and Wellington saw declines, down 0.7 percent and 1.5 percent respectively, while Canterbury and Otago posted gains of 0.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Jobs fell for men by -0.8 percent (9014), and women by -0.5 percent (6421).<\/p>\n<p>By age, the biggest drop was among 15-19-year-olds at -5.2 percent, while 35-39-year-olds had the biggest gain, rising by 2.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Despite November having fewer jobs overall, gross earnings rose by $380 million (2.4 percent) compared with a year ago, totalling $15.9 billion for the month.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, employment is inched up in November, but the labour market remains softer than last year, led by weakness in construction and professional services.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/radionz.us6.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=211a938dcf3e634ba2427dde9&amp;id=b3d362e693\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for Ng\u0101 Pitopito K\u014drero<\/a>, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Stats NZ&#8217;s found seasonally adjusted filled jobs rose by 0.3 percent.
