The company behind the Are You Dead? \u200dapp, targeted at people living alone, has introduced a subscription fee and changed its name for a \u2060global audience after it went viral in China.<\/p>\n

The app is called Sileme in Chinese, which translates to \u201cAre you dead?\u201d \u200bin English. It is \u201ca lightweight safety tool\u201d created for \u201canyone choosing a solitary lifestyle\u201d, according to its development team. It requires setting up one emergency contact and sends automatic notifications if the \u200duser has not \u2060checked in via the app for consecutive days.<\/p>\n

Sileme said on its official Weibo platform on Tuesday that the company will launch the global brand name Demumu in its new version to be released soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter extensive consideration, the \u2018Sileme\u2019 app will officially adopt the global brand name \u2018Demumu\u2019 in its forthcoming new release,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The app surged to the top of Apple\u2019s paid app chart this week.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the company said it \u200cwould launch an 8-yuan ($1.15) payment scheme to \u2060help cover increasing costs. On the App Store, it was charging 8 Hong Kong dollars (US$1.03) to download the app.<\/p>\n

China is estimated to have up to 200 million one-person households with a solo living rate exceeding 30 percent, according to the state newspaper the Global Times.<\/p>\n
