Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen says Senne Lammens is \u201cnot good enough\u201d to be Manchester United\u2019s first-choice goalkeeper.<\/p>\n
Lammens joined United from Royal Antwerp for \u00a318m in the summer, replacing the much maligned Andre Onana as the Red Devils\u2019 No.1 goalkeeper.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old made just 52 senior appearances for the Belgian side before making the switch to Old Trafford and has impressed the majority with his mature performances this season.<\/p>\n
READ MORE: Time to talk: The 20 best players out of contract in 2027\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n But Meulensteen, who served under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford from 2007 to 2013, believes that while Lammens is \u201cpotentially a really good goalkeeper\u201d , he is is \u201cnot ready\u201d to be United\u2019s No.1.<\/p>\n \u201cI do think that United have quite a few individuals in the squad who, in my opinion, are not good enough for Man United,\u2019 Meulensteen said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.<\/p>\n \u201cThey concede far too many goals, defensively they\u2019re not solid, and every team analyses that, and every team that has the quality and the courage, you\u2019re going to create things.<\/p>\n \u201cI think if you look at the top, top teams, look at Arsenal, they\u2019ve got a really good goalkeeper, Liverpool good goalkeeper, City, United it\u2019s not good enough, the goalkeepers are not good enough.<\/p>\n \u201cThis Lammens boy is potentially a really good goalkeeper. I don\u2019t think at this moment in time he\u2019s ready, and he\u2019s not good enough, for this moment in time, that\u2019s my opinion.<\/p>\n \u201cFor instance, even Aston Villa with [Emiliano] Martinez, that type, these goalkeepers win games for you.\u201d<\/p>\n MORE MANCHESTER UNITED COVERAGE ON F365 Meulensteen insists Carrick must focus on fixing United\u2019s defensive issues having seen the Red Devils struggle to plug gaps in the two games under Darren Fletcher.<\/p>\n \u201cI rate him, I rated him highly as a player and he was a very intelligent player, I think he did a really good job at Middlesbrough, obviously I know a little bit more about it because my son worked there for a year as an analyst,\u201d said Meulensteen.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019ll know what to do, but he has to go in there and be really, really clear to the players.<\/p>\n \u201cHe has to work in certain aspects, coaching on that pitch is going to be vital because they need to start getting clean sheets. That transition going from that system of Amorim into a 4-2-3-1, or a 4-3-3, however you want to defend, your shape has to be coached.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat I saw in both of the games [under Darren Fletcher], there\u2019s gaps all over the place and opposition will exploit that. He has to come in, especially in the games against City and Arsenal coming up, and make sure that\u2019s sorted.<\/p>\n \u201cI trust him in his football ability and intelligence to get that right. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s too difficult to fix, in my opinion.
