He was born with haemophilia, a congenital disorder where blood doesn\u2019t clot properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">From the age of 10, he had been involved in injecting himself with blood factors to help stop spontaneous bleeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019ve spent my life taking care of myself,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAlthough getting the MS diagnosis was obviously alarming in one respect, I just did what I normally do, which is take care of myself and got on top of it as quickly as I could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane said there \u201cit was a bit hairy for a couple of years\u201d after he was diagnosed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">That included battling sensory issues, including numbness in his fingers.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Andy Kane says MS symptoms, including finger numbness, had caused him plenty of concerns. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe way to describe it is if you dip your hands in ice water &#8230; then you take them out and kind of can\u2019t feel things for a bit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was a bit like that for me &#8230; oh, s***.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">He made \u201cradical changes\u201d to his life in a bid to give himself the best chance of avoiding MS relapses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">That included dietary changes \u2013 he no longer eats meat or dairy \u2013 trying to get a good intake of vitamin D via being in the sunlight and also attempting to lower his stress levels; the latter being \u201ceasier said than done\u201d, he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">He also injects himself several times a week with medication that is aimed to prevent new damage to the central nervous system, slow disease progression and reduce the frequency or severity of relapses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The initial problems he had in his fingers was not a good situation for a guitarist, Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat certainly affected me. But I\u2019ve been able to keep it at bay such that it hasn\u2019t got any worse than it was in the first few years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The transtasman effort to get the band back together<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Push Push will perform four gigs \u2013 in Hamilton, Auckland, Mount Maunganui and Whangapar\u0101oa \u2013 between February 19-22 to celebrate 35 years since Trippin\u2019 dominated the Kiwi music charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Late last year they released their first single in eight years, E.P.B (Clutching at the Sky).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The song is a reworking of Euphoric Plunder &amp; Bliss, which featured on their 1992 album, Trillion Shades of Happy.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Push Push put out a new single late last year, with a five-song EP released around their upcoming tour. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">With Kane and Silver both living in Sydney, preparing for the quartet of shows \u2013 including nailing down previously unreleased songs that feature on their new EP \u2013 has been challenging logistically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">In his home studio, Kane has muted the guitar parts of song recordings for him and Silver to jam over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Back in Auckland, Havoc, drummer Scott Cortese and bassist Steve Abplanalp have been jamming with acclaimed metal guitarist Sharne Scarborough \u2013 laying down a \u201chybrid version of what Silver and I might do\u201d \u2013 in the absence of Push Push\u2019s guitarists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSo, it\u2019s going to be interesting when we all five of us get in a room together,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The group will spend two weeks rehearsing together in Auckland before the first of the reunion concerts to be played in Hamilton on February 19.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI will be flying by the seat of my pants on night one, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Kane joked.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Trippin' was a runaway hit for Push Push when it was released in mid-1991. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Despite the distance between Kane and Silver and the rest of the band, Kane said the group were \u201cvery close\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhenever we\u2019re back in a room together, we just pick up where we leave off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Revealed: The truth behind Push Push\u2019s split<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">After a string of hit singles and the album A Trillion Shades of Happy, Push Push decided to relocate to Australia in mid-1993.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">They had enjoyed chart success with Trippin\u2019 there, and had toured Australia twice and gained TV exposure, including performing an energetic version of the hit song on popular Aussie show Hey, Hey It\u2019s Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane said part of the motivation was so the band could \u201cdevelop and evolve\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Push Push went their separate ways in mid-1993 after a planned shift to Australia fell apart. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAustralia seemed like the logical thing,\u201d he said. \u201cIn a lot of respects, it was restarting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane, Silver, Abplanalp and Cortese arrived in Australia first, with Havoc set to follow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The band\u2019s departure came at a time when things had become \u201ctense\u201d within Push Push.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">That included Kane and Havoc not \u201cseeing eye to eye\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAt the time we were the main drivers of the band,\u201d Kane recalled. \u201cThere was stuff that we needed to sort out and we hadn\u2019t. We were looking at life in a different way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNeither him or I were mature enough to handle with that situation at all. Despite being as close as we were as friends, as deeply connected as we were, we just didn\u2019t have the capacity to deal with it. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane said a comment Havoc made when farewelling him and Silver at Auckland International Airport summed up the state of their relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe said, \u2018Is it worth me coming?\u2019. We\u2019re at the airport and I said, \u2018Well, only you can answer that question\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/mikey-havoc-on-fatherhood-finding-his-voice-and-life-after-fame\/premium\/XQGUSDSMRNCN7MDBGVAKYICK4Y\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/entertainment\/mikey-havoc-on-fatherhood-finding-his-voice-and-life-after-fame\/premium\/XQGUSDSMRNCN7MDBGVAKYICK4Y\/\">Havoc was meant to follow<\/a> two weeks later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">He never did, contacting Kane saying: \u201cI\u2019m not coming\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd it was like, \u2018okay, f***. Now what?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Looking back, Kane said it was a \u201ctough time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere was a lot of desire to continue from most of us. But you need everyone on board to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The four band members in Australia initially tried to keep the band going, but eventually Silver, Cortese and Abplanalp decided to return to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane \u2013 who had travelled to Australia with a \u201cguitar, an amp and a thousand bucks\u201d \u2013 decided to stick it out across the Tasman.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Four Push Push members made it to Australia in 1993, but singer Mikey Havoc stayed behind in Auckland. Photo \/ Dean Purcell<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI needed greener pastures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was like starting again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Employment for him included picking up gig work and being a freelance sound engineer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">He later built a small recording studio in his Sydney home, where he had recorded \u201csome pretty amazing things\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Years later he ran into Silver during a trip home for Christmas and said: \u201cDude, I\u2019m going to do this one more time. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Back in Sydney, they became members of GTO \u2013 Kane juggling lead vocal duties alongside guitar playing \u2013 who had a hit with Superstars of Modern Love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Sydney remains home for the duo, with the Kane a proud father of three boys now in their 20s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Like their dad, they all love to play guitar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAll of them have played music, but I\u2019ve been very wary about being a stage dad,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey\u2019ve all played music in bands together, just for fun, which is great. Music is a joy for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018bright, searing flash\u2019: From high school hopefuls to chart-toppers<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">A look at Push Push\u2019s official Facebook page almost doubles as a time capsule when you look back at just how big the band were in New Zealand in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">It features videos of the band performing live on TV shows on both sides of the Tasman, clippings from newspaper articles and the weekly drop of \u201cFan Mail Friday\u201d, the publishing of some of the mountain of letters the band received from their devoted supporters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Fan Mail Friday is also poignant for Kane.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Fan Mail Friday always provides an entertaining read on Push Push's official Facebook page. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The contents were found in a box of fan mail Kane found in his late mother\u2019s house after her death about a year ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was awesome to see the excitement from people, that they were so enthused by the music, that they wanted to write to the people making it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The Push Push story had its beginnings at Rangitoto College in the mid-1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane, Havoc and Abplanalp featured in the original line-up, with Silver and Cortese replacing other foundation members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhat we were was relentless,\u201d Kane recalled. \u201cLike we never, ever gave up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe practised three times a week, every week from the age of 14. If you couldn\u2019t handle it, you couldn\u2019t stay in the band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">That dedication helped the hype around them grow around Auckland, including Push Push being star attractions at The Powerstation\u2019s five bands for five bucks gig nights.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Legendary Auckland music venue The Powerstation was where Push Push introduced many music fans to their future hit songs. Photo \/ Google Maps<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Their gigs would attract crowds of up to 1000 at the legendary Auckland live venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">But still, vast sections of the New Zealand music industry scoffed at the idea of Push Push as potential hit-makers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cCertainly, the music industry had no time for us &#8230; all,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe would do these shows at The Powerstation &#8230; and we were being ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Push Push released one album, A Trillion Shades of Happy, before they split. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">When it reached No 1 in mid-1991, the song would be the first distributed by Festival Records to reach the top of the Kiwi charts since Blondie\u2019s 1979 hit Heart of Glass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Follow-up singles Song 27 and What My Baby Likes, and the album A Trillion Shades of Happy were also chart hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Push Push worked hard for their success, including extensive New Zealand tours playing in some towns where top bands normally didn\u2019t visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">They also supported the likes of global superstars AC\/DC, Poison, Skid Row and Def Leppard.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"A newspaper ad congratulating Push Push on topping the NZ music charts. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was fantastic,\u201d Kane said of their comeback release. \u201cIt felt like &#8230; we\u2019re okay, we can do this again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cAnd again, it does feel like unfinished business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The new EP features E.P.B (Clutching at the Sky), new songs Skin, The Truth and Under the Eye, and the live favourite but previously unrecorded Sleep in the Morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">All five songs mean a lot to the band.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Kane said Skin was arguably the most personal song the band had written.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The song initially started out as a soundcheck jam during the early 1990s, but was completed with lyrics by Havoc last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s taken 34 years to finish,\u201d Kane said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFor us as a band, it\u2019s a very meaningful song. Silver and I have been playing it a lot lately and we\u2019re often red-eyed at the end of it. It really gets us in the guts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cYou know, I\u2019m getting teary now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt feels really important to be able to make these musical statements for each other.
