{"id":238396,"date":"2026-01-17T17:51:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T17:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/238396\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T17:51:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T17:51:22","slug":"reptile-parks-plea-to-hunter-residents-after-covid-bites-milking-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/238396\/","title":{"rendered":"Reptile park\u2019s plea to Hunter residents after COVID \u2018bites\u2019 milking program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Residents throughout the Hunter are being urgently asked to safely capture and donate funnel-web spiders found around their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The plea comes after the Australian Reptile Park, located just an hour from Newcastle, issued a warning during the week that the long-lasting effects of COVID-19 lockdowns were still being felt in one of its critical life-saving programs.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the venue is facing the lowest number of funnel-web spiders it has ever seen, placing pressure on the initiative that supplies essential venom across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Once they milk the atracids, the toxin is frozen and sent to CSL Seqirus in Melbourne to make antivenom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2200\" height=\"3300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/emma-teni-sydney-funnel-web-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-186788\"  \/>Australian Reptile Park spider keeper Emma Teni.
