So, we’re trying to get ahead of Mother Nature so that we can get on with the job and find out what we’re actually dealing with. We still don’t know yet. It’s very, very slow and it needs to be slow to be safe because we’ve got men under there, which at any time could be very, very dangerous for them.”

Service said it was also unknown how long it would take for the road to reopen, but it was expected to be several weeks.

“We won’t know until we’ve cleared that material if we’ve still got a road under it or if that road is capable of taking vehicle traffic.”

People are urged to delay travel where possible, or to allow time for the long detour via State Highway 35 or State Highway 5.

The detour is five hours longer than driving from Mātāwai and Ōpōtiki on State Highway 2.

The NZ Transport Agency will also continue to monitor and maintain the detour route to ensure it is safe and accessible.

Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero, a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.

A slip on State Highway 2 through the Waioweka Gorge.
