Following an initial uproar last week, Grok said it would restrict image generation and editing to paying subscribers, prompting outraged critics to accuse Musk\u2019s company of monetising the problem rather than solving it.<\/p>\n
Bowing to global pressure, X said it would restrict \u201call users\u201d, including paying subscribers, from using the Grok account to edit images of people in \u201crevealing clothes such as bikinis\u201d.<\/p>\n
But, soon after, the Philippines announced the country\u2019s block could be effective with haste.<\/p>\n
Cybercrime chief Renato Paraiso said that X\u2019s announcement would have no effect on the government\u2019s plans, adding that authorities will monitor whether the platform follows through on its promises.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to clean the internet now because much toxic content is appearing, especially with the advent of AI,\u201d said Philippine telecommunications secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Malaysia said its regulators found that X\u2019s measures to prevent Grok from generating revealing images were \u201cnot done in totality\u201d.<\/p>\n
If X can successfully deactivate and prevent the generation of such content, Malaysia will lift the temporary restriction on Grok, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said.<\/p>\n
\u2018Zero tolerance\u2019<\/p>\n
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer \u2013 a favourite target of Musk\u2019s political posts \u2013 welcomed that X was acting to ensure \u201cfull compliance with UK law\u201d, but insisted that it \u201cmust happen immediately\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we need to strengthen existing laws further, we are prepared to do that,\u201d Starmer wrote on X.<\/p>\n
Pressure has been building on xAI to rein in Grok after its so-called \u201cSpicy Mode\u201d feature allowed users to create sexualised deepfakes using simple text prompts such as \u201cput her in a bikini\u201d or \u201cremove her clothes\u201d.<\/p>\n
The European Commission, which acts as the EU\u2019s digital watchdog, has said it will \u201ccarefully assess\u201d measures taken by X to ensure \u201cthey effectively protect citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrance and Europe taking action… is producing results,\u201d Paris\u2019 digital minister Anne Le Henanff said, warning that \u201cno platform is above the law\u201d.<\/p>\n
California Governor Gavin Newsom said that xAI\u2019s \u201cvile\u201d decision to allow sexually explicit deepfakes to proliferate prompted him to urge the state\u2019s attorney general, Rob Bonta, to hold the company accountable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have zero tolerance for the AI-based creation and dissemination of nonconsensual intimate images or of child sexual abuse material,\u201d Bonta said.<\/p>\n
He added that the California investigation would determine whether xAI violated state law after the explicit imagery was \u201cused to harass people across the internet\u201d.<\/p>\n
Further adding pressure on xAI, a coalition of 28 civil society groups submitted open letters to the CEOs of Apple and Google, urging them to ban Grok and X from their app stores amid the surge in sexualised images.<\/p>\n
