{"id":240882,"date":"2026-01-19T13:27:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T13:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/240882\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T13:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T13:27:13","slug":"gisborne-driver-ethan-rees-second-at-new-zealand-superstock-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/240882\/","title":{"rendered":"Gisborne driver Ethan Rees second at New Zealand Superstock Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Five of the 10 Gisborne cars in the event made the final \u2013 Ethan Rees (127G), his brother Asher Rees (126G), father Peter Rees (10G), Josh Prentice (5G) and Tim Ross (144G).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cJosh finished sixth in the 26-car final, Tim seventh, Peter eighth and Asher 19th,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Ethan Rees placed second from the qualifying rounds on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">After the three-heat final he was equal with Brad Uhlenberg from Whanganui, so a run-off over four laps was needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Rees had his nose in front until the final turn of the fourth lap when his opponent managed to steer him into the wall from behind and shoot past to the chequered flag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI thought Ethan was unlucky,\u201d Hughes said. \u201cHis driving was unreal right through the championships. He had the pace and drove with conviction. He wasn\u2019t the top qualifier for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">William Humphries, from Palmerston North, was third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Peter Rees has won the coveted title once before while Asher is a three-time champion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">For Ethan Rees it felt great to go one better than three years ago when he was third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cI\u2019m excited to run this number [2NZ] for the next 12 months,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">He told the Gisborne Herald he was \u201cstoked\u201d to have \u201cmade the podium for Gisborne\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe meeting was well run by Wellington. It had full-on and quick racing, what you\u2019d expect at the New Zealand championships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Rees said it was a good track to race on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey\u2019ve done quite [a bit] of work on it, with a bit of banking \u2013 not as good as Gizzy\u2019s banking, but still a good track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe car went well and there was only a bit of superficial damage to it, which was great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">The Rees trio are to race in the World 240s superstocks in Rotorua this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere will be a good 10 \u2018G\u2019 cars in that one, so we are all really looking forward to it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve still got the teams racing to come as well for both superstocks and stockcars, and we\u2019re looking forward to that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Saloon car racer Daniel Cook (left) on the podium in third place at the New Zealand Saloon Car Grand Prix at Waikaraka Speedway in Auckland at the weekend. Jarred Fletcher won and Scott Landsdowne was second.<\/p>\n<p>Podium for Gisborne saloon driver Daniel Cook<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Waikaraka Park Speedway in Auckland hosted the New Zealand Saloon Car Grand Prix and Gisborne\u2019s Daniel Cook (77G) got on the podium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">It was won by defending champion and reigning New Zealand champ Jarred Fletcher from the Waikato, with Auckland\u2019s Scott Landsdowne second and Cook third.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Landsdowne was driving a car formerly owned by Daniel\u2019s brother Ethan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was great to have two Vulcan Chassis on the podium,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cThere were 39 cars competing and I got first and second in the heats to get through to the final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt was an awesome result on a very rough track.
