(Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<\/p>\n<p id=\"10a19241-5ba5-4bfa-a754-cca0aeeb0c17\">The sun sure has woken up this week, unleashing a powerful X-class solar flare along with a fast Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME), which is currently forecast to hit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> within the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">If the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CME<\/a> arrives as expected and has the correct magnetic orientation to be &#8220;geoeffective,&#8221; we could witness strong (G3) or even severe (G4) geomagnetic storm conditions tonight, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/weather.metoffice.gov.uk\/specialist-forecasts\/space-weather\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.K. Met Office<\/a>. If these conditions are reached, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">northern lights<\/a> might be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"10a19241-5ba5-4bfa-a754-cca0aeeb0c17-2\">Space weather forecasters are busy analysing data and running models to narrow down the CME&#8217;s arrival window.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-81f98d95-3b25-4e47-893f-557ea203c78f\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why the CME&#8217;s impact depends on its magnetic orientation<\/p>\n<p id=\"99b99c5e-2c87-4496-bb46-ad54c15fc86c\">CME arrivals are notoriously difficult to forecast. (Image credit: NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory)<\/p>\n<p id=\"9403684f-d71b-41c2-9e7d-539454655256\">If the Bz is instead oriented northward, Earth&#8217;s magnetic field largely deflects the incoming energy, effectively &#8220;closing the door,&#8221; and what looked like a promising <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a> event can end up being a bit of a nothing burger.<\/p>\n<p>Some CMEs contain a mixture of southward and northward magnetic fields, which can lead to stop-start or fluctuating geomagnetic activity. X-class flares are the strongest eruptions and the number following the X indicates how powerful the event is. Today&#8217;s flare was measured at X1.9, putting it in the upper tier of solar outbursts.<\/p>\n<p>The powerful flare from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sunspots-formation-discovery-observations\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sunspot<\/a> region AR4341 peaked at 1:09 p.m. EST (1809 GMT), according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/x-class-flare-activity-observed-18-january-2026\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/x-class-flare-activity-observed-18-january-2026\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NOAA&#8217;s Space Weather Prediction Center<\/a>. (Image credit: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center)<a id=\"elk-0ea69449-3610-4084-9581-24e8fab6224b\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is a CME and how can it affect Earth?<\/p>\n<p id=\"0ad42243-79f2-49fc-9d17-65ac2ef5ecdf\">A CME is a massive expulsion of plasma from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> that carries a magnetic field. If a CME hits Earth&#8217;s magnetosphere \u2014 the protective magnetic &#8220;bubble&#8221; generated by our planet \u2014 it can trigger a geomagnetic storm.<\/p>\n<p>These geomagnetic storms vary in intensity and are therefore classified on a scale from minor (G1) to extreme (G5). Current forecasts from the U.K. Met Office suggest the incoming CME could produce strong (G3) to severe (G4) geomagnetic storm conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Storms of this magnitude can disrupt <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> operations, degrade <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS<\/a> navigation and increase atmospheric drag on spacecraft.
