{"id":241198,"date":"2026-01-19T18:34:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T18:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/241198\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T18:34:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T18:34:07","slug":"china-previews-how-powerful-its-new-xuntian-space-telescope-will-be-ahead-of-2027-launch-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/241198\/","title":{"rendered":"China previews how powerful its new Xuntian space telescope will be ahead of 2027 launch (video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"b5a434c5-0aa8-4014-8fcc-57e6ffa578d3\">China is getting close to launching a large space telescope to orbit along with its Tiangong space station, and scientists have just completed a full observation simulation in preparation.<\/p>\n<p>The bus-sized Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) \u2014 also known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-telescope-xuntian\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-telescope-xuntian\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Xuntian<\/a>, or &#8220;surveying the heavens&#8221; \u2014 is being readied for a launch as soon as early 2027. It features a 6.6-foot-wide (2 meters) primary mirror, slightly smaller than that of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b5a434c5-0aa8-4014-8fcc-57e6ffa578d3-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Xuntian will, however, be a much more capable sky survey instrument, according to Chinese space officials. It carries a 2.5-billion-pixel camera and boasts a field of view around 300 times larger than the venerable Hubble, surveying the sky from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths and delivering high spatial resolution imagery.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"c1b11919-4ce8-44a8-a688-4db4c0cda724\">As preparations for launch enter the final stages, a collaborative Chinese research team built an end-to-end simulation suite to provide mock observations for both the telescope&#8217;s optical and other observation systems to replicate expected instrumental and observational conditions and evaluate the telescope&#8217;s overall performance. The results were <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.raa-journal.org\/issues\/all\/2026\/v26n2\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.raa-journal.org\/issues\/all\/2026\/v26n2\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics in early January.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Space Station Telescope is expected to make major contributions to a range of fields, including cosmology, the study of galaxies, the evolution of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> and stars and planets. It could also provide insights into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20930-dark-matter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark matter<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark energy<\/a>, according to the National Astronomical Observatories under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), which led the mock observation study.<\/p>\n<p>After launch on a Long March 5B rocket, Xuntian will fly independently in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a>, but it will co-orbit with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-telescope-xuntian\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/china-space-telescope-xuntian\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiangong space station<\/a>. As shown in a video published by China Central Television (CCTV), the spacecraft will be able to dock with Tiangong.
