(Supplied: Water Corporation)<\/p>\n<p>Mercury rising<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Amid the water issues, an extreme heatwave warning has been issued for the Pilbara and Gascoyne, with forecast temperatures getting close to 50C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In 2022, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-01-13\/onslow-in-the-pilbara-equals-australias-hottest-day-on-record\/100754082\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100754082\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Onslow recorded Australia&#8217;s equal highest maximum temperature<\/a> at 50.7C.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bronze statue of a dog is surrounded by splashes of water. (ABC Pilbara: Kelsey Reid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There is a higher level of calcium in the [Millstream] water, so the plants get a film of calcium over the leaves and it makes it harder for them to uptake nutrients,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We would definitely be affected if any water restrictions were put in place for our business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A desalinated future<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The WA government has teamed up with Rio Tinto to plan for a new desalination plant at its existing Dampier operation for the short term, as they look for less climate-reliant solutions for the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Adjunct professor Bill Grace, from the University of Western Australia&#8217;s Australian Urban Design Research Centre, said change to the West Pilbara Water Scheme was needed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man wears dark clothes and looks at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/d016de53b0b8489f0ea017239cf87b6c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bill Grace says it is likely the north of the state will see fewer cyclones, but they will be more intense.
