\n\tMatthew McConaughey<\/a> recently joined Woody Harrelson<\/a> and Ted Danson on their \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name<\/a>\u201d podcast. During the episode, Harrelson recalled there were \u201cso many times\u201d he wanted to \u201cpunch\u201d McConaughey while filming the first season of \u201cTrue Detective<\/a>\u201d because he was method acting.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s method,\u201d Harrelson said. \u201cWhen we were shooting, he was Rust Cohle. There [were] so many times I wanted to punch this motherfucker in the face. I\u2019m so pissed at him cause he\u2019s in his character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMcConaughey explained that he needed to be \u201cstoic\u201d between takes to stay in his character\u2019s headspace.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re sitting there. We\u2019re about to start shooting, and we were rehearsing,\u201d McConaughey recalled. \u201cI\u2019m just kind of being stoic Rust Cohle. Woody goes, like, \u2018Hey man, I need to talk to you about something.\u2019 He goes, \u2018The way you and I work, McConaughey, I hit you the ball, you hit back, I hit it back to you. We volley, we play. \u2026 Man, that\u2019s us. It\u2019s dramatic, but it\u2019s also comedy.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn HBO\u2019s \u201cTrue Detective,\u201d Harrelson and McConaughey played a pair of Southern investigators hunting a serial killer in the esoteric back country of Louisiana. Harrelson, at one point, thought the show was too dark and suggested to McConaughey during production that they should add in some jokes.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe recalled, \u201cI remember saying to [McConaughey] before we started filming, I\u2019m like, \u2018Dude, people are gonna expect to laugh with us. We gotta throw some jokes in here.\u2019 He\u2019s just like, \u2018Mhm.\u2019 I\u2019m waiting for him to say, \u2018Yeah, you\u2019re totally, no, none of that.\u2019 He just, \u2018Mhm, yeah.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cTrue Detective\u201d Season 1 earned 5 Emmy Awards and is still widely considered one of the best shows in HBO\u2019s catalog. Despite the enduring popularity, Harrelson recently told \u201cToday\u201d that there is \u201cno chance\u201d of him and McConaughey returning to \u201cTrue Detective.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn fairness, never. No chance,\u201d Harrelson said<\/a>. \u201cBecause it turned out great.
