(Supplied: Dean Ransom)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was one of<a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-04-03\/queenslanders-remember-yatala-bullens-african-lion-safari\/100932026\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100932026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> eight such parks established across the country by the Bullen famil<\/a>y, which had been running circuses since the 1920s before deciding to establish year-round experiences with safari parks in the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The park in Adelaide offered visitors the chance to drive into fenced-off paddocks \u2014 windows wound up \u2014 as lions roamed and checked them out at close quarters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dave told an <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/listen\/programs\/adelaide-mornings\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ABC Radio Adelaide<\/a> history segment that they had seen the sign for the park \u2014 which closed in 1981 \u2014 on the side of the road and decided to visit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-04-03\/queenslanders-remember-yatala-bullens-african-lion-safari\/100932026\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wild stories from Yatala&#8217;s safari park <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Take a trip back in time to Queensland&#8217;s\u00a0drive-through\u00a0safari, where the only thing\u00a0between you and a field full of\u00a0lions was a\u00a0car window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We saw this little bow shelter and all of a sudden these little lion cubs appeared and my wife said, &#8216;Let&#8217;s go take a look,'&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So we drove up a bit closer and all of a sudden this big male lion appeared from behind the shelter, came up and started sniffing the grille.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were in panic stations because my wife thought he was going to eat the car.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He put his paws up on the bonnet, and the bonnet went straight down to the motor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After the lion jumped onto their roof, Dave saw another visitor in a car towing a caravan about 50 metres away with &#8220;his window down an inch&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;He said, &#8216;Why don&#8217;t you get out and shoo it off?'&#8221; Dave said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I said, &#8216;Yeah, right. (Supplied: Dean Ransom, photo by Peter Read)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Another listener spoke about the time he visited the park with his children and watched as a woman fed the lions while being towed in a caged trailer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The lions would come up all around the cage, and there was one big lion on top of the cage and suddenly she yelled, &#8216;Bob! He&#8217;s got my thumb,'&#8221; the listener said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She didn&#8217;t lose her thumb, but it was in the press the next day so it must have been serious.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Others remembered a sign out the front of the park that announced, among ticketing prices: &#8220;Poms on pushbikes admitted free.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Other signs included warnings like: &#8220;Trespassers will be eaten.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There were also unsubstantiated stories about escaped lions \u2014 although one incident that prompted panic was potentially down to a case of mistaken identity with a great Dane.<\/p>\n<p>Lions on the loose<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Many of the rumours may have stemmed back to an incident in 1964 when four lions escaped a circus at Windsor in Adelaide&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-12-07\/perths-african-lion-safari-20-years-since-closure\/10582740\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Trespassers will be eaten&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It&#8217;s been 20 years since the closure of Perth&#8217;s only open-range zoo, where thousands of people once visited for a suburban safari experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Canberra Times on December 23 and 24 that year reported that the lions roamed free for two and a half hours after mauling and killing their 49-year-old keeper, George Herzog, who was believed to have been feeding them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One lion returned to its cage when called, but three others were shot dead by police marksmen and gun shop owner Bill Hambly-Clark, who said he shot a lion from &#8220;25 yards&#8221; (22.8 metres) as it was devouring Mr Herzog&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He shot the other lion as it charged him &#8220;through the bushes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;One of them was in full spring when I dropped it at about six feet,&#8221; Mr Hambly-Clark told The Canberra Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I shot once and then again.
