But if you use one, make sure it\u2019s actually doing the job you hired it for. Read the label. Check the amino acids. And don\u2019t settle for less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/21417\/protein-big-lie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Protein<\/a> is essential to muscle growth, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/27290\/understanding-the-difference\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bodybuilders<\/a> depend on it,\u00a0often, to improve their physique and fuel their training demands. During the Golden Era (1960s-1980s), protein powders weren\u2019t readily available. Over decades, they\u2019ve grown in popularity, with many athletes turning to them to <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/protein-calculator\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meet their daily macronutrient goals<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For Schwarzenegger, protein is just as important today as it was when he was the reigning seven-time <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/history-mr-olympia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Olympia<\/a> champion. But some labels don\u2019t tell the full story. And sometimes it is. But that single phrase can hide a huge quality difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whey protein concentrate can range from about 25% protein to over 80% protein by weight. That\u2019s because lower-grade concentrates contain much more lactose and filler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that supplement companies don\u2019t have to disclose which grade of protein they put in their products:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that all concentrates are bad. It\u2019s that you don\u2019t know what whey concentrate you get because supplement labels don\u2019t have to disclose which grade they use. Two products can look identical on the front and be radically different on the inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll still get the grams listed on the Nutrition Facts label. But you won\u2019t know whether that protein came from a dense, high-quality source or a lower-grade powder padded with lactose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that issue, he warned that some companies \u2018amino spike\u2019 their products to artificially inflate the protein on the back of their labels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s not even the biggest issue. Some companies go a step further with a practice called protein (or amino) spiking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtein content is often measured indirectly by nitrogen levels. Cheap, free-form amino acids contain nitrogen, so manufacturers can add them to inflate the protein count without adding real, complete protein that your body can use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shared that glycine, taurine, and glutamine are common spiking ingredients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cCommon spiking ingredients include glycine, taurine, and glutamine. These amino acids aren\u2019t dangerous, but they don\u2019t stimulate muscle protein synthesis the way complete protein does.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">That means a scoop claiming 25 grams of protein may only deliver 15\u201318 grams of usable, muscle-building protein.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schwarzenegger provided a cheat sheet for those looking for high quality protein powders:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Check the ingredient list<br \/>\nLook for an amino acid profile on the label<br \/>\nAvoid proprietary blends<br \/>\nDo a reality check on price\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When looking at the label, he said the amino acid profile should have leucine at around 10-11% with BCAAs making up at least 25%. If those numbers are off, he believes it\u2019s a red flag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook for an amino acid profile on the label (good products have nothing to hide). For whey, leucine should be at least 10\u201311% of total protein, and total BCAAs should be at least 25%. If those numbers don\u2019t line up, that\u2019s a red flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To ensure you pick a quality protein powder, he noted that picking an NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport- approved option is best.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to make it simple, select a whey protein isolate, which is standardized at ~90% protein with minimal lactose, so you don\u2019t have to worry about the variation you get with concentrates. Only buy third-party certified products, such as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport. And stick to brands that disclose protein grade and amino acid data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A consumer report confirmed that many protein powders <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/consumer-reports-high-levels-lead-protein-shakes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contain high levels of lead<\/a>. However, Schwarzenegger emphasized, \u2018you don\u2019t need to fear all toxins.\u2019 He warned that people can become exposed to heavy metals just from <a href=\"https:\/\/fitnessvolt.com\/arnold-schwarzenegger-heavy-metals-protein-powders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trace amounts found on common items<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schwarzenegger doesn\u2019t believe protein powders are inherently bad.
