{"id":242747,"date":"2026-01-20T15:55:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T15:55:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/242747\/"},"modified":"2026-01-20T15:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T15:55:22","slug":"heavy-rain-thunderstorms-flooding-where-is-summer-the-front-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/242747\/","title":{"rendered":"Heavy rain, thunderstorms, flooding: Where is summer? \u2013 The Front Page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Crews have already been working on clearing slips along State Highway 2, between \u014cp\u014dtiki and Gisborne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Niwa principal scientist Chris Brandolino told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1049-the-front-page-30038501\/?pname=nzh_web&amp;sc=podcast_show\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.iheart.com\/podcast\/1049-the-front-page-30038501\/?pname=nzh_web&amp;sc=podcast_show\">The Front Page<\/a> that we are getting a lot of tropical moisture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019s a tropical low to our north over north and west of New Caledonia and the tropics, and that is going to move south. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt\u2019s disorganised, but what it has with it is a lot of moisture from the tropics. There\u2019s a separate low over the Tasman Sea. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSo the two are going to work together to provide us with this really wet period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019ve already seen the rain and wind, but that\u2019s really going to increase and should reach its apex sometime during the day on Wednesday and perhaps even into early Thursday for some,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Brandolino said that places like the Coromandel, eastern Northland, Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne have the highest risk of some heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re talking 100 to maybe even 200ml of rain in a pretty short period of time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cNorthland had flooding over the weekend, so the concern there is that you already had flooding, now you\u2019re going to get more rain. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat could, unfortunately, be a situation where flooding occurs when normally it wouldn\u2019t, simply because the ground is so wet,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">Auckland Anniversary weekend looks like it\u2019ll be one spent indoors, but Brandolino is convinced summer isn\u2019t over just yet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re in mid-January here, so we still have a good 10 days before the end of January, and we have all of February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHere\u2019s the good thing about being an island nation. We\u2019re surrounded by water. Our ocean temperatures reach their highest typically in early to mid-February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhy is that a big deal? Because that helps to keep us warmer a bit longer. So as we go into March, our ocean temperatures are really quite warm still.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ycPbyrajIUrF\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cMarch can often be an extension of summer.
