Photograph: Laurent Gilli\u00e9ron\/EPA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Tuesday, after weeks of aggressive threats by Trump to seize the vast Arctic island, which is a largely autonomous part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/denmark\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denmark<\/a>, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, said he preferred \u201crespect to bullies\u201d and the \u201crule of law to brutality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Macron told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/davos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the World Economic Forum<\/a> in Davos, Switzerland, that now was \u201cnot a time for new imperialism or new colonialism\u201d, criticising the \u201cuseless aggressivity\u201d of Trump\u2019s pledge to levy tariffs on countries that oppose a US takeover of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The US was seeking to \u201cweaken and subordinate Europe\u201d by demanding \u201cmaximum concessions\u201d and imposing tariffs that were \u201cfundamentally unacceptable \u2013 even more so when they are used as leverage against territorial sovereignty\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trump has ramped up his push to grab Greenland in recent weeks, saying the US would take control of the vast Arctic island <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/09\/trump-greenland-threats-white-house\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cone way or the other\u201d<\/a> and: \u201cNow it is time, and it will be done!!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The European Commission president said Trump\u2019s threat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/jan\/17\/trump-tariff-european-countries-greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to impose a 10% tariff<\/a> on imports from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland unless they dropped their objections to his plans was \u201ca mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Appearing to call Trump\u2019s trustworthiness into question, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ursula-von-der-leyen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> also noted that the EU and US had \u201cagreed to a trade deal last July, and in politics, as in business, a deal is a deal. When friends shake hands, it must mean something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Europeans, she added, \u201cconsider the people of the US not just our allies, but our friends\u201d. politics and one of few European leaders regularly speaking to US Trump \u2013 for the term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aim to be both principled and pragmatic.<\/p>\n<p>Principled in our commitment to fundamental values, sovereignty, territorial integrity, the prohibition of the use of force except when consistent with the UN Charter and respect for human rights, and pragmatic in recognising that progress is often incremental, that interests diverge, that not every partner will share all of our values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Carney says that in Ukraine, Canada remains \u201ca core member\u201d of the Coalition of the Willing, and a committed member of Nato.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also turns to Greenland and says:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He gets applause for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He also says Canada \u201cstrongly opposes\u201d tariffs over Greenland and calls for talks to resolve these differences of view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the Q&amp;A, he says say that while security discussions on securing the Arctic are legitimately important, he believes there is a \u201cbetter outcome that come from the discussions that have been catalysed in the unusual way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He says \u201cRussia is, without a question, a threat in the Arctic\u201d and it \u201cdoes lots of horrible things\u201d as he takes this opportunity to condemn its continuous attacks on Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But he says \u201cthe threat is more prospective than actual at this stage\u201d and \u201cwe intend to keep it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p Photograph: Evan Vucci\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meloni, who is ideologically aligned with Trump, on Sunday said that she had told him his threatened tariffs on European countries that recently sent troops to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/greenland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland<\/a> were a \u201cmistake\u201d and that his administration had perhaps misunderstood the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Meloni stressed the necessity to \u201cresume dialogue\u201d between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/europe-news\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europe<\/a> and the US and \u201cavoid escalation\u201d, saying there had been \u201ca problem of understanding and communication\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The far-right Italian premier, who was the only European leader to attend Trump\u2019s inauguration last January, has long played a delicate balancing act as she strives to maintain friendly relations with the US president and her allegiance with European partners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But opposition leaders say this approach could be detrimental for Italy and Europe, and have urged Meloni to address parliament over the Greenland issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cGiorgia Meloni should have been clearer,\u201d said Elly Schlein, leader of the centre-left Democratic party. \u201cIt\u2019s not enough to say that Donald Trump was wrong. Egede, Greenland\u2019s former prime minister, said \u201cnothing is ruled out\u201d and that if Greenland, which is part of Nato, is attacked, it will have \u201cconsequences for the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not likely that military force will be used, but it is not ruled out either, the other party has made that clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we must be prepared for all possibilities. <\/p>\n<p>But we emphasise that Greenland is part of Nato, and if there is an escalation, it will also have consequences for the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Jens-Frederik Nielsen also said there is \u201cno doubt\u201d that Greenland will need a larger military presence amid rising tensions in the Arctic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we look at the defence sector, we can see that there are a lot of exercises from allied countries, and there is growing tension in the Arctic.
