Together, they pledged a combined $1 billion in late December 2025 to jumpstart the project.<\/p>\n<p>FCC is regarded as the \u201cpotential successor\u201d of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time in history that private donors wish to partner with CERN to build an extraordinary research instrument that will allow humanity to take major steps forward in our understanding of fundamental physics and the Universe,\u201d said Fabiola Gianotti, CERN Director-General.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am profoundly grateful to them for their generosity, vision, and unwavering commitment to knowledge and exploration,\u201d Gianotti added in an <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/news\/press-release\/cern\/private-donors-pledge-860-million-euros-cerns-future-circular-collider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">earlier press release<\/a> on December 18, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for FCC<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/cern-particle-collider-fcc-lhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">proposed FCC<\/a> is expected to feature a massive 90.7 km (56.3 miles) tunnel buried 200 meters underground \u2014 nearly triple the size of the current Large Hadron Collider.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pending a final decision by the CERN Council in 2028, construction of the initial electron-positron phase (FCC-ee) is slated to begin in 2030, with operations likely to launch in 2047.<\/p>\n<p>This multi-decade endeavor aims to succeed the High Luminosity LHC, providing a specialized environment for high-precision <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/cern-atom-smasher-95-missing-universe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">particle studies<\/a> until the early 2060s.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/home.cern\/science\/accelerators\/future-circular-collider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FCC project<\/a> follows a two-stage scientific roadmap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First, the FCC-ee would serve as a Higgs factory, producing a million Higgs particles to analyze their properties with ten times the precision of the LHC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Around 2073, this will be replaced by the FCC-hh, a high-energy \u201cdiscovery machine\u201d designed to smash protons at 85 TeV.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/physicsworld.com\/a\/cern-accepts-1bn-in-private-cash-towards-future-circular-collider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Reportedly,<\/a> this second phase aims to hunt for entirely new particles through the end of the century.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s similar project stalled <\/p>\n<p>The FCC\u2019s momentum follows a major setback for its primary rival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For years, China\u2019s proposed Circular Electron\u2013Positron Collider (CEPC) was seen as a direct rival that might beat Europe to the punch. However, Beijing recently declined to include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3331618\/chinas-god-particle-quest-over-worlds-largest-collider-project-may-be-dropped\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CEPC in its current government\u2019s<\/a> 2026\u20132030 five-year plan.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing may reconsider it in 2030 if the FCC is not officially approved by then.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With China\u2019s project on the back burner, CERN now has a clear lane to remain the world\u2019s capital of physics<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, a pause in China\u2019s domestic collider project may open the door for a collaborative partnership modeled after ITER. Under this framework, China could contribute critical components and industrial expertise to the FCC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New CERN Director-General Mark Thomson faces a dual challenge: navigating the diplomatic path for the FCC while overseeing a massive overhaul of the current lab infrastructure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Thomson\u2019s immediate priority is the June 2026 shutdown of the <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/new-circular-collider-proposal-dwarfs-large-hadron-collider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">LHC <\/a>to begin the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This ambitious project will replace nearly 90 percent of the accelerator\u2019s focus systems with advanced niobium-tin (Nb3Sn) superconducting magnets.
