{"id":243516,"date":"2026-01-21T01:34:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T01:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/243516\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T01:34:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T01:34:09","slug":"labour-mp-adrian-rurawhe-to-retire-from-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/243516\/","title":{"rendered":"Labour MP Adrian Rurawhe to retire from politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4LMJMQO_RNZD7352_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Speaker of the House Adrian Rurawhe\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nAdrian Rurawhe<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Angus Dreaver\n<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP Adrian Rurawhe has announced he will retire from politics next month.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/thehouse\/529190\/parliament-bill-ensuring-fair-funding-for-parliament-and-scrutiny\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">former Speaker<\/a> has been in parliament for more than a decade, starting in 2014 as the MP for Te Tai Hau\u0101uru.<\/p>\n<p>He was Speaker of the House of Representatives from August 2022 to December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>He says he spent the summer thinking about wh\u0101nau and church, and retiring now will allow him to be more involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to express my gratitude to the people of Te Tai Hau\u0101uru, the Labour movement, and the countless individuals and communities I have served over the past twelve years,&#8221; said Rurawhe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also want to acknowledge my wh\u0101nau for their continued support. I would never have become an MP without them, and I will be forever grateful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Labour leader Chris Hipkins said Rurawhe was respected across the House in his role as Speaker, he was a valued member of the Labour team, and a passionate advocate for Maori.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d like to acknowledge Adrian for the significant contribution he has made to our team and to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will miss him and wish him all the very best as he moves away from the political arena.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His last day will be Waitangi Day and he will be replaced by Georgie Dansey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Loss&#8217; to Labour&#8217;s M\u0101ori caucus<\/p>\n<p>Senior Labour MP Willie Jackson paid tribute to the outgoing MP saying it&#8217;s &#8220;quite a loss&#8221; to Labour&#8217;s M\u0101ori caucus and he was very proud of how Rurawhe conducted himself as Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said Rurawhe was &#8220;one of those guys who seems to have the crossover,&#8221; enjoying cross-party support, including from Winston Peters and the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4K1CGGH_250998_Bridge_9_September_1_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Willie Jackson\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nSenior Labour MP Willie Jackson said Rurawhe&#8217;s departure was a loss to the M\u0101ori caucus.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Samuel Rillstone\n<\/p>\n<p>He also spoke about the interest in the M\u0101ori seats this year, with Labour focused on winning them back.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters at the Labour party&#8217;s caucus retreat in West Auckland on Wednesday, Jackson said Rurawhe wasn&#8217;t in attendance, instead taking the time to speak to his family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s done a runner on us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said he was surprised at the news.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought he might have stayed around, just in case we become the government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson only found out on Tuesday night, and acknowledged Rurawhe would know he&#8217;d try to change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I talked to him about being the Speaker again.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was a lot of hope for him to do that, because he made such an impression in a short time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson spoke of the way Rurawhe &#8220;rolled out a tikanga that was for everyone&#8221; but was &#8220;very much a tikanga M\u0101ori.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I liked about it was it was embraced by everybody.It wasn&#8217;t just for M\u0101ori.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It showed that tikanga M\u0101ori could be embraced by everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JUGF8W_Image_4_jfif.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"Labour's Hamilton East candidate Georgie Dansey and senior Labour MP Willie Jackson.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nGeorgie Dansey with MP Willie Jackson at the Labour caucus meeting on Wednesday.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Lillian Hanly\n<\/p>\n<p>Georgie Dansey is next on the Labour list, and has been confirmed as Labour&#8217;s Hamilton East candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Dansey said she had &#8220;big shoes to fill&#8221; with Rurawhe departing, but was grateful to be there.<\/p>\n<p>M\u0101ori seats<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said he hadn&#8217;t considered stepping down himself, he was focused on &#8220;this year&#8221; and &#8220;winning the M\u0101ori seats back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t seen interest in M\u0101ori seats like this for many years,&#8221; pointing to the turmoil Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori had gone through last year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of our people have decided that they&#8217;re coming back to Labour in the M\u0101ori seats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson wouldn&#8217;t confirm if Peeni Henare would be running again for T\u0101maki Makaurau.<\/p>\n<p>Willow-Jean Prime was likely to be the candidate for Te Tai Tokerau, but that also hadn&#8217;t been confirmed yet.<\/p>\n<p>Labour was hoping to sign off their M\u0101ori seat candidates by the end of the month, Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>He also said some of the candidates were &#8220;quite adamant&#8221; they didn&#8217;t want to go on the list, and campaign for the seat only.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s all those sort of strategies to sort out which will be happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said there had been no conversations between Labour and Te P\u0101ti M\u0101ori over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>It was pointed out to Jackson that Hipkins hadn&#8217;t mentioned M\u0101ori once during his opening remarks, despite criticising the government significantly over the political term on the issue of race relations.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said that didn&#8217;t mean Labour&#8217;s strategy would change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to pressure this government in terms of their response to M\u0101ori. It&#8217;s unacceptable the way they have attacked M\u0101ori,&#8221; he said, but also pointed to workers, women and the rainbow community, saying every group in society had been attacked by the government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our record speaks for itself,&#8221; whether it was the Treaty Principles Bill or housing, &#8220;we have attacked this government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be unrelenting in that area.
