As the weather wasn\u2019t improving, Gray put out an SOS on the Tairua community Facebook page to see if anyone could get to him and open the garage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see that Tairua is flooded, but if he has a car, he could move out of the danger zone,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n
Gray said she had an incredible response from the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tell you what, the people were amazing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, within five minutes, I had responses of \u2018We\u2019re heading down there now, we\u2019ve seen him, the car\u2019s out\u2019, so I just can\u2019t say enough for that community \u2013 it just rallies around.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gray said this wasn\u2019t the first time the community had banded together to check on their neighbours.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember [Cyclone] Gabrielle \u2013 and even the one before that \u2013 the community just seem to pull together and support one another with things like \u2018get out and check on your neighbours, and look out for each other\u2019,<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her father\u2019s car was taken out of the garage and moved to a drier spot, Gray said, and his house hadn\u2019t flooded.<\/p>\n
She said it was comforting to know people on Facebook were prepared to care for others.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople heading down and they\u2019ve shared it around, so obviously there\u2019s more than one or two,\u201d Gray said. \u201cThere\u2019s a community of carers up there doing amazing work.\u201d<\/p>\n
