{"id":245728,"date":"2026-01-22T07:18:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T07:18:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/245728\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T07:18:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T07:18:13","slug":"stunning-time-lapse-video-captured-using-artificial-eclipse-shows-3-massive-eruptions-on-the-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/245728\/","title":{"rendered":"Stunning time-lapse video captured using &#8216;artificial eclipse&#8217; shows 3 massive eruptions on the sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"ae358993-975d-474e-887c-6b08508b5198\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/european-space-agency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA) has released a stunning time-lapse of a trio of solar eruptions exploding into space from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/the-sun\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> during an &#8220;artificial eclipse.&#8221; The unique footage, captured by the newly operational Proba-3 mission, could help scientists unravel one of the biggest mysteries surrounding our home star, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The Proba-3 mission consists of two probes, dubbed the coronagraph and the occulter, which were <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/1st-of-its-kind-european-spacecraft-duo-will-create-mini-eclipses-in-space-transforming-how-we-study-the-sun\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/space-exploration\/1st-of-its-kind-european-spacecraft-duo-will-create-mini-eclipses-in-space-transforming-how-we-study-the-sun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched into a highly elliptical orbit around Earth<\/a> in December 2024. By perfectly aligning the coronograph behind the occulter, scientists can view the sun with its bright center fully obscured, just <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/photographers-capture-the-exact-moment-a-gargantuan-storm-blasts-out-of-the-sun-during-a-total-solar-eclipse\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/photographers-capture-the-exact-moment-a-gargantuan-storm-blasts-out-of-the-sun-during-a-total-solar-eclipse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like we see from the planet&#8217;s surface<\/a> during a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-eclipse\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-eclipse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar eclipse<\/a> \u2014 but more frequently and over longer periods of time. This allows researchers to study the hidden subtleties of the sun&#8217;s faint atmosphere, or corona, like never before.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"ae358993-975d-474e-887c-6b08508b5198-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The new video, released by ESA on Jan. 19, shows footage from a five-hour &#8220;eclipse&#8221; on Sept. 2, 2025, sped up into a four-second clip. The yellow light surrounding the sun is the corona, viewed by Proba-3&#8217;s coronograph with a helium filter. In the center, scientists have superimposed footage of the solar surface captured concurrently by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/nasa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>&#8216;s Solar Dynamics Observatory. With data from both spacecraft combined, researchers can see how the sun&#8217;s surface and corona interact in unprecedented detail.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"51a95a11-7055-40c4-b06c-15e1c697d5be\">Three major plasma plumes shoot out of the sun during the video. At first glance, these look like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/solar-flare\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar flares<\/a> \u2014 the massive explosions that can <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/earth-hit-by-biggest-solar-radiation-storm-in-23-years-triggering-northern-lights-as-far-as-southern-california\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/earth-hit-by-biggest-solar-radiation-storm-in-23-years-triggering-northern-lights-as-far-as-southern-california\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hurl solar storms toward Earth<\/a>. However, when you look closely at the solar disk, there are no bright flashes, which are the telltale signs of a flare. Instead, what we are seeing are <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/no-you-didnt-see-a-solar-flare-during-the-total-eclipse-but-you-may-have-seen-something-just-as-special\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/no-you-didnt-see-a-solar-flare-during-the-total-eclipse-but-you-may-have-seen-something-just-as-special\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what researchers refer to as prominences<\/a>, which are towering loops of plasma on the sun&#8217;s surface that overextend and snap, flinging their ionized gas into space.<\/p>\n<p>While they are less powerful than flares, prominences are equally valuable to researchers because they are usually harder to spot, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Andrei-Zhukov\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Andrei-Zhukov\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andrei Zhukov<\/a>, a researcher at the Royal Observatory of Belgium and principal investigator of Proba-3&#8217;s coronograph, explained in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/01\/Proba-3_our_eyes_on_the_Sun_s_inner_corona\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2026\/01\/Proba-3_our_eyes_on_the_Sun_s_inner_corona\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;Seeing so many prominence eruptions in such a short timeframe is rare, so I&#8217;m very happy we managed to capture them so clearly during our observation window.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/arzFCmRoVdCYD6an2oTt8d.jpg\" alt=\"A pair of spacecraft orbiting Earth with the sun in background\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/arzFCmRoVdCYD6an2oTt8d.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/arzFCmRoVdCYD6an2oTt8d.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>ESA&#8217;s Proba-3 mission consists of twin spacecraft, the coronagraph (left) and the occulter(right), which align to create artificial eclipses in space. (Image credit: European Space Agency)<\/p>\n<p id=\"77fd0e1a-a2f2-4c21-8fa9-15e08887284b\">The bright light emitted by the prominence eruptions suggests they are significantly hotter than the surrounding corona. But in reality, their plasma is much cooler \u2014 only &#8220;around 10,000 degrees&#8221; compared to the million-degree corona, Zhokov said.<\/p>\n<p>The extremely high temperature of the corona, which is &#8220;around 200 times hotter than the sun&#8217;s surface,&#8221; is one of the sun&#8217;s biggest remaining mysteries, Zhukov said. To date, scientists have struggled to explain <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/mystery-of-the-suns-mind-bogglingly-hot-atmosphere-may-finally-be-solved\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/mystery-of-the-suns-mind-bogglingly-hot-atmosphere-may-finally-be-solved\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">why the corona is so much hotter<\/a> than the rest of the sun, and footage like this could be the key to figuring it out, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-a11c71ea-7502-4a5a-b48d-63e6c072c49c\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>All eyes on the sun<\/p>\n<p id=\"7abd89d4-f9b6-45bf-a7f0-ac31c72d7917\">Proba-3 has now observed at least 50 different artificial eclipses since <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/behold-1st-images-of-artificial-solar-eclipse-captured-by-esas-proba-3-mission\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/behold-1st-images-of-artificial-solar-eclipse-captured-by-esas-proba-3-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beginning operations<\/a> around seven months ago, and will hopefully collect hundreds more in the coming years, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba-3_fills_the_solar_observation_gap\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Proba-3_fills_the_solar_observation_gap\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ESA<\/a>. But it is not the only new technology that is making waves in the solar physics community.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in June 2025, NASA&#8217;s CODEX telescope, affixed to the exterior of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a>, collected its first images of the sun, revealing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/never-been-seen-before-first-images-from-new-iss-solar-telescope-reveal-subtle-fluctuations-in-suns-outer-atmosphere\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/the-sun\/never-been-seen-before-first-images-from-new-iss-solar-telescope-reveal-subtle-fluctuations-in-suns-outer-atmosphere\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">never-before-seen perturbations in the corona<\/a> linked to solar wind.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d4fc9e16-6c40-413d-b131-42a5d382783c\">Last year, the Daniel K.
