The move allowed the dissident artist to travel for the first time since authorities revoked his document in 2011 \u2013 the same year he spent 81 days in secret government detention for alleged tax evasion. He moved to Berlin shortly after.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknvyhr9000b3b5y6xyrqnex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the past 10 years Ai has lived in Germany, the UK and now Portugal, never once setting foot in his native country, where people with far less controversial pasts have faced <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/traveladvisories\/china-travel-advisory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">arbitrary detention<\/a>. But in mid-December, he decided to take the risk, returning for a three-week visit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmko6nyug00043b5yp37asqkw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt felt like a phone call that had been disconnected for 10 years suddenly reconnecting,\u201d he said of the instant he arrived into Beijing. \u201cThe tone, rhythm and speed, all returned to how they were before.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/img-2285-copy.jpg\" alt=\"The artist flew into Beijing Capital International Airport with his 17-year-old son. Varied scenes include a video of smokestacks in the unmistakable soft light of a Beijing winter, the artist puffing cigarettes as a Lazy Susan spins leisurely with dishes and a bottle of Nongfu Spring, a local mineral water brand; and a robot getting out of an elevator.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknvyt3n000f3b5yu4kyogbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still images show the artist lifting dumbbells at an indoor gym and catching up with old friends \u2013 the ordinary becoming somewhat extraordinary when compared to how intensely he was surveilled by authorities when he was last in China\u2019s capital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknvz1vy000m3b5yjsfq5yyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nostalgia permeates the images. \u201cWhat I missed most was speaking Chinese,\u201d he said. \u201cFor immigrants, the greatest loss is not wealth, loneliness or an unfamiliar lifestyle, but the loss of linguistic exchange.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/img-0340-18.JPG\" alt=\"Ai reunited with his 93-year-old mother.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknvz10f000k3b5y96kkqqtd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Ai left in 2015, he was a thorn on the government\u2019s side. The outspoken artist and activist relentlessly criticized China on everything from alleged human rights abuses to censorship and corruption, with artworks such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2018\/feb\/15\/ai-weiwei-remembering-sichuan-earthquake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cRemembering\u201d (2009)<\/a> \u2013 an installation commemorating the thousands of children killed under the collapse of shoddily-constructed school buildings during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake \u2013 gaining international attention. In \u201cS.A.C.R.E.D,\u201d he depicted what it was like to be imprisoned for nearly three months, in the form of six life-sized dioramas that debuted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/independentplus\/venice-biennale-review-ai-weiwei-s-s-a-c-r-e-d-are-scenes-of-abjection-showing-sublime-craftmanship-8635195.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2013 Venice Biennale<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknvzjtw000p3b5y5gbq51ou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Such pieces came at a time when \u2013 in the years after the 2008 Beijing Olympics \u2013 officials carefully projected a new era of Chinese development and aggressively cracked down on any dissent. In the decade Ai has been away, China\u2019s censorship and surveillance efforts have only grown more sophisticated, with critics now fearing that artificial intelligence is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/12\/04\/china\/china-ai-censorship-surveillance-report-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turbocharging<\/a> these systems of control.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/w_860.jpeg\" alt=\"&lt;em&gt;S.A.C.R.E.D. &lt;\/em&gt;(detail), 2012. But now his son is almost 17 years old, he no longer bears the same weight of parental responsibility \u2013 and feels \u201crelatively freer\u201d to act of his own accord.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoy5zio00093b5y8fhxx0bi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Poignant photos from the trip shared with CNN show the father and son walking out of Beijing Capital International Airport, as well as reuniting with Ai\u2019s 93-year-old mother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw0o8w000x3b5yd8j2c4q6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen I saw my mother, she was smiling and especially happy to see my son. They held hands the entire time. She did not say much, but she was deeply content. Where else do you plan to go?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw0mwf000v3b5yuw4yspjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fact that rest of the 68-year-old\u2019s visit was \u201csmooth and, one could say, pleasant\u201d may signal authorities\u2019 confidence on a number of fronts: a Chinese public that is increasingly unfamiliar with the artist as his name and works have been largely censored on the country\u2019s social media platforms; and in the expansive reach of their surveillance technologies. Politically, there might also be little to gain from the international outcry that would arise were the high-profile artist detained or prevented from entering Beijing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoyjm4x00023b5yfw3zhdre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The red lines in China, as always, are vague and fast-evolving. Another prominent Chinese artist, Gao Zhen, had relocated to New York but returned to China in June 2024 to visit family, only to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/03\/style\/china-detains-artist-gao-brothers-mao-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detained<\/a> about a week before he planned to return to the US, for scathing sculptures of Mao he created over a decade ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw1glj00143b5y49kmatzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            From Europe, Ai has continued to produce works that are critical of the state, such as the 2020 documentary \u201cCoronation,\u201d on China\u2019s initial handling of the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, and \u201cCockroach,\u201d a sympathetic take on the 2019 Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. But he has also gone to great lengths to make art of what\u2019s in front of him: the global refugee crisis and, more recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/08\/18\/ai-weiwei-visits-ukrainian-front-lines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the war in Ukraine<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoz2apc000n3b5yqw71u5ft@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When asked if he thought the Chinese government\u2019s attitudes towards him had changed given his trouble-free stay, he said he didn\u2019t think any change began recently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkoz4zjw000u3b5yy4z2ynrd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cRather, it comes from my long-term public work in expressing my views\u2026 Although a country or group may disagree with my positions, they at least recognize that I speak sincerely and not for personal gain.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw1tbz00193b5yk0n7omqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He believes China is \u201cin an upward phase,\u201d pointing to individual wealth, national strength and personal freedoms, though discussing political topics remains taboo. \u201cThe overall trajectory is one of ascent, even though different problems emerge at different stages.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw1tbz001a3b5y45dw1lfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Western society, conversely, is in decline, he argued, in perhaps rare agreement with the frequent message from Chinese leaders. He added that changes he\u2019s seen over the past 10 years have \u201cshocked\u201d him. \u201cIt feels like a landslide burying the highways it once built. Values once celebrated now appear hollow and collapsed. The West increasingly struggles to sustain its own logic; in many areas it has lost its ethical authority and descended into something barely recognizable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw1rwb00173b5y56r2ava4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So does he plan on moving back to China anytime soon?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw260i001f3b5yaz5treak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI have never truly left anywhere; the distance has simply grown longer,\u201d Ai explained. He once said he felt that he belonged nowhere, a <a href=\"https:\/\/sculpturemagazine.art\/freedom-is-never-really-free-a-conversation-with-ai-weiwei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cstranger\u201d<\/a> everywhere he goes. But it\u2019s his Chinese passport that keeps him rooted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmknw260i001g3b5y052qsj9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven when I lived under great difficulty, I still felt that this identity gave me the fundamental right to return to my place of birth.
