\u201cThe Alabama Solution,\u201d a critically acclaimed documentary<\/a> about Alabama\u2019s prison system, earned an Academy Award nomination<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n

The film, co-directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, chronicles the state\u2019s maximum-security lockups<\/a> using footage from inside prison walls taken by inmates on contraband cellphones.<\/p>\n

You can stream \u201cThe Alabama Solution\u201d on HBO Max<\/a>. It first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The filmmakers said the footage \u201cexposes the inhumane conditions inside Alabama\u2019s prisons.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film earned a nomination in the documentary feature category. Other nominees include \u201cCome See Me in the Good Light,\u201c \u201dCutting through Rocks,\u201c \u201dMr. Nobody Against Putin\u201d and \u201cThe Perfect Neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Alabama Solution\u201d begins with filmmakers visiting a revival meeting at a south Alabama lockup in 2019, as inmates pull them aside to tell them about horrible conditions inside the facilities, which filmmakers were not allowed to enter and record, prompting a 6-year investigation.<\/p>\n

The cellphone videos show leaking sewage, rats captured in water bottles, inmates sleeping on the floors of overcrowded dorms, people overdosing without medical attention, blood scattered across tile floors and more.<\/p>\n

Some inmates filmed themselves to submit to documentarians or recorded their video calls with producers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to their work, the film is able to break through the veil of secrecy and bring the audience into a world that is otherwise inaccessible,\u201d Kaufman said.<\/p>\n

Birmingham-based journalist Beth Shelburne was a co-producer on the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Alabama Solution\u201d marks just the latest Alabama connection to the Oscars<\/a>. It\u2019s state\u2019s first appearance in the documentary feature category since RaMell Ross\u2019 critically acclaimed \u201cHale County This Morning, This Evening\u201d in 2019.<\/p>\n

Other notable Oscar moments spotlighting the state include \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d winning multiple awards in 1962, Birmingham native Louise Fletcher earning best actress for \u201cOne Flew over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest\u201d in 1975, \u201cForrest Gump\u201d sweeping the ceremony in 1994, and Montgomery\u2019s own Octavia Spencer taking best supporting actress for \u201cThe Help\u201d in 2011.<\/p>\n

In Alabama\u2019s biggest night at the iconic awards show, Birmingham-born Daniel Scheinert<\/a> (with his filmmaking partner Daniel Kwan) won several Oscars for \u201cEverything Everywhere All at Once.\u201d<\/a> The film won seven total, including best picture, directing, original screenplay, actress (Michelle Yeoh), supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and editing (Alabama-born Paul Rogers<\/a>). It led all nominees with 11.<\/p>\n
