From the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16748-international-space-station.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a>, NASA astronaut Chris Williams captured a view of the rocket coastside at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17705-nasa-kennedy-space-center.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kennedy Space Center<\/a> in Florida. &#8220;If you zoom in on the rightmost launch pad, you can see a shadow just to the left of the center of the pad,&#8221; Williams said <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Astro_ChrisW\/status\/2013285850977546668\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Astro_ChrisW\/status\/2013285850977546668\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">in an X post<\/a> Monday (Jan. 19). &#8220;That shadow is from the rocket (and launch tower) that will soon take four of my friends on a trip around the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"fab0be55-a458-48a6-8f9f-0cdf82d5c06c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Artemis 2 is expected to carry four astronauts on a lunar mission: NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nasa-astronaut-reid-wiseman-space-biography\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reid Williams <\/a>(commander), <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/victor-glover.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victor Glover<\/a> (pilot) and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/christina-koch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Koch<\/a> (mission specialist), along with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Space Agency<\/a> astronaut and mission specialist <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-moon-astronaut-canada-jeremy-hansen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeremy Hansen<\/a>. Glover will be the first person of color to leave low Earth orbit, while Koch will be the first woman and Hansen will be the first non-American. The moon mission is the first to return astronauts to the lunar surface since <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17287-apollo-17-last-moon-landing.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17287-apollo-17-last-moon-landing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 17<\/a>&#8216;s moon-landing excursion in 1972.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"e2ce2cbb-5942-4a80-b0ac-a233ce593997\">Williams, temporarily flying solo on the U.S. side of the ISS after the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/this-is-nasa-at-its-finest-crew-11-astronauts-in-good-shape-after-smooth-medical-evacuation-and-splashdown-agency-says\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/human-spaceflight\/this-is-nasa-at-its-finest-crew-11-astronauts-in-good-shape-after-smooth-medical-evacuation-and-splashdown-agency-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">early and unprecedented medical evacuation<\/a> of SpaceX Crew-11 on Jan. 15, said the space photo was not his best effort. (&#8220;Should have grabbed a different lens,&#8221; he added.) But it was a &#8220;special&#8221; image to him nonetheless, Williams said. The ISS coincidentally passed over Florida at about the same time <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/01\/17\/nasas-moonbound-artemis-ii-rocket-reaches-launch-pad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/01\/17\/nasas-moonbound-artemis-ii-rocket-reaches-launch-pad\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SLS arrived<\/a> at Launch Pad 39B on Saturday at 6:42 p.m. EST (2342 GMT). The rocket spent nearly 12 hours <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-rolls-artemis-2-moon-rocket-to-launch-pad-space-photo-of-the-day-for-jan-19-2025\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-rolls-artemis-2-moon-rocket-to-launch-pad-space-photo-of-the-day-for-jan-19-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carefully moving across KSC<\/a> on top of a baseball-infield-sized &#8220;crawler-transporter&#8221; previously tasked for Apollo and space shuttle missions.<\/p>\n<p>The crew of Artemis 2 aims to spend 10 days testing the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a> on the capsule&#8217;s third space mission. The astronauts will first do a checkout in Earth orbit, and assuming all goes well, perform an engine burn (a trans-lunar injection) to bring them around the moon and home again.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 2 will be the first crewed flight for Orion. But an Orion flew uncrewed around Earth in 2014 for Exploration Flight Test-1 atop a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/united-launch-alliance.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/united-launch-alliance.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United Launch Alliance<\/a> Delta IV rocket, and another uncrewed Orion went around the moon in 2022 with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 1<\/a> \u2014 which flew atop SLS on the rocket&#8217;s first flight.<\/p>\n<p>Artemis 2 will conduct a wide range of science and human health experiments to prepare for more long-duration moon missions. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> is scheduled to land with astronauts in 2027 or 2028, pending readiness of the SpaceX <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> lander <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/spacex-could-lose-launch-contract-for-artemis-3-astronaut-moon-mission-nasa-chief-says-the-problem-is-theyre-behind\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/spacex-could-lose-launch-contract-for-artemis-3-astronaut-moon-mission-nasa-chief-says-the-problem-is-theyre-behind\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">currently tasked<\/a> to land astronauts there. More <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis program<\/a> missions are expected to follow, as NASA aims to build up a permanent presence on the moon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The launch date of Artemis 2 is subject to change as the rocket and spacecraft undergo tests at the pad, most especially a &#8220;wet dress rehearsal&#8221; (or fueling of the rocket, in a simulated launch sequence) that required <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-moon-mission-wet-dress-rehearsal-success\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-moon-mission-wet-dress-rehearsal-success\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple attempts for certification<\/a> of Artemis 1. The rehearsal is scheduled for no later than Feb. 2.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has released windows for Artemis 2&#8217;s launch in February, March and April.
