(Image credit: Blue Origin)<\/p>\n<p id=\"341cb91f-5e9b-4e7a-b7b0-f245082c7981\">New Shepard lifted off from Blue Origin&#8217;s West Texas launch site today at 11:25 a.m. EST (1625 GMT; 10:25 a.m. local time in Texas), after a brief delay caused by &#8220;unauthorized personnel on the range,&#8221; according to the Blue Origin stream.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"341cb91f-5e9b-4e7a-b7b0-f245082c7981-1\">The six people inside the vehicle&#8217;s capsule were entrepreneur and pilot Tim Drexler; Linda Edwards, a retired obstetrician\/gynecologist; real estate developer Alain Fernandez; entrepreneur Alberto Guti\u00e9rrez; Jim Hendren, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel who founded the company Hendren Plastics Inc.; and Laura Stiles, Blue Origin\u2019s director of New Shepard launch operations.<\/p>\n<p>Stiles was a late addition to the crew. (Image credit: Blue Origin)<\/p>\n<p id=\"4cc7479d-3657-4966-a1cb-2d4be034370a\">The sextet enjoyed a few minutes of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23017-weightlessness.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/23017-weightlessness.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weightlessness<\/a> and saw Earth against the blackness of space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>They also earned their astronaut wings, as New Shepard carried them above the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/karman-line-where-does-space-begin\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/karman-line-where-does-space-begin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K\u00e1rm\u00e1n Line<\/a>, the 62-mile-high (100 kilometers) boundary that&#8217;s widely recognized as the start of outer space. (It&#8217;s not unanimous, however; both NASA and the U.S. Air Force deem space to begin 50 miles, or 80 km, above Earth.) Telemetry during today&#8217;s flight indicated the capsule reached an altitude of nearly 350,000 feet (106,680 meters).<\/p>\n<p>NS-38 ended quickly, as all New Shepard flights do. The vehicle&#8217;s rocket came back to Earth for a powered touchdown at its designated landing pad at 7 minutes and 20 seconds after liftoff. The capsule followed suit roughly three minutes later, raising a cloud of dust in the West Texas desert as it settled down softly under parachutes.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin has now flown 98 people to space over its 17 human spaceflights, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-first-astronaut-launch\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/jeff-bezos-blue-origin-first-astronaut-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first of which<\/a> took place on July 20, 2021 \u2014 the 52nd anniversary of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 11<\/a> moon landing. That tally includes 92 different individuals, as six people have ridden the capsule twice.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin has not revealed its ticket prices. For perspective, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18993-virgin-galactic.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18993-virgin-galactic.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Galactic<\/a>, the company&#8217;s main competitor in the suborbital space tourism industry, charges <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/future-astronaut-product-information\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/future-astronaut-product-information\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$600,000 per seat<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Blue Origin just sent its latest batch of space tourists to the final frontier.
