Of course, there&#8217;s always the possibility that clouds could conspire to ruin the show \u2014 an eventuality that led to the cancellation of the earlier <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/say-goodbye-to-comet-3i-atlas-watch-it-head-for-interstellar-space-in-real-time-with-this-free-jan-16-livestream\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/say-goodbye-to-comet-3i-atlas-watch-it-head-for-interstellar-space-in-real-time-with-this-free-jan-16-livestream\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 16 livestream<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-36f3611f-9a96-41dc-bdf0-64f0e13627d0\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3I\/ATLAS at opposition<\/p>\n<p>Magnitude<\/p>\n<p class=\"fancy-box__body-text\">&#8220;Magnitude&#8221; is used to measure the apparent brightness of objects in the night sky. The lower the number, the brighter the object! The brightest stars are around Mag +1, while a full moon is -13 and the sun is -27.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"c28143c9-bae5-4c70-b0b6-8fe371a44b5c-0\">Comet 3I\/ATLAS will be positioned at opposition on the night of Jan. 22 \u2014 a time when <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> objects and planets are typically at their best and brightest for observation, appearing fully illuminated by sunlight from Earth&#8217;s perspective, much like a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16830-full-moon-calendar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, 3I\/ATLAS is forecast to remain relatively faint, with a predicted <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21640-star-luminosity-and-magnitude.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">magnitude<\/a> of +13.2 as it reaches opposition, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/cobs.si\/comet\/2643\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/cobs.si\/comet\/2643\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Comet Observation Database<\/a> (COBS) run by the Crni Vrh Observatory in Slovenia. As such, it&#8217;ll be too faint to see with the naked eye, only becoming detectable through large telescopes.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-147d32eb-7479-4ebc-9755-d09e1d292ad0\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3I\/ATLAS&#8217; journey through the solar system<\/p>\n<p id=\"e5cda00e-5047-4898-bc9a-85a97fba1832\">Comet 3I\/ATLAS was first detected on July 1, 2025, by astronomers analyzing data collected by a telescope scanning the sky as part of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>-funded <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Asteroid<\/a> Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) project. A frenzied analysis of its orbit swiftly led scientists to conclude that it was just the third interstellar visitor to our solar system, behind <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/oumuamua.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1I\/ &#8216;Oumuamua<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-comet-borisov-most-pristine-ever\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2I\/Borisov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3I\/ATLAS made its closest approach to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> on Oct. 31, 2025, around which time it disappeared for weeks behind the glare of a parent star. It later emerged to perform its closest proximity pass of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> \u2014 an event known as perigee \u2014 on Dec. 19.
