But for astronomers at the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18665-european-southern-observatory-major-discoveries.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Southern Observatory<\/a> (ESO), one particular question is of particular focus: If you pack more material into a star-forming cloud, do you get more stars for your trouble?<\/p>\n<p>Using the<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/apex\/artemis\/?lang\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/apex\/artemis\/?lang\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> ArT\u00e9MiS camera<\/a> at the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/apex\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/apex\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">APEX<\/a>) \u2014 a radio telescope in Chile operated by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy \u2014 the ESO astronomers zoomed in on GAL316, a key stellar nursery. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2601a\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/potw2601a\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">This image<\/a> is part of a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/artemis-apex-caffeine\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/artemis-apex-caffeine\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">larger survey<\/a>, the Core And Filament Formation\/Evolution In Natal Environments (CAFFEINE) survey, which the astronomers are using to answer their key question \u2014 and fuel their thirst for knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e-0\">This is a layered, composite view of a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39935-stellar-nursery-unites-star-formation-theories.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39935-stellar-nursery-unites-star-formation-theories.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stellar nursery<\/a> that combines two perspectives on the same region of space. The blue, filamentary structure traces cold gas and dust \u2014 the raw ingredients of star formation \u2014 detected by APEX with the ArT\u00e9MiS camera. The background starfield comes from VISTA observations, showing the densely populated <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> region behind and around the cloud. Background: VVV)<a id=\"elk-4ea5f98e-f0cf-42ba-97b1-a0d90d63dd91\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p id=\"aff6cc88-2fa9-4bca-9789-710d15528be3\">CAFFEINE was designed to test whether the densest star-forming regions become more productive, converting a higher fraction of their material into new stars once they pass the minimum density needed for star birth. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/pdf\/2024\/08\/aa49908-24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/pdf\/2024\/08\/aa49908-24.pdf\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The survey&#8217;s results<\/a> suggest the opposite of the intuitive guess: above that threshold, the densest regions observed didn&#8217;t seem any more efficient at forming stars than other nurseries.<\/p>\n<p>That matters because it hints that star formation isn&#8217;t limited by &#8220;not enough stuff&#8221; once clouds reach a certain point. Instead, other brakes may still be at work even in the richest regions, the internal motions of the cloud, the way material fragments, and the early influence of young stars on their surroundings.
