(Scott McNaughton \/ The Age)<\/p>\n<p>The long-awaited contactless upgrade has entered the testing phase.<\/p>\n<p>Lab-testing of contactless payments will begin next month, with more than 100 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/government\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"government\">government<\/a> staff set to trial different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/banks\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"bank cards\">bank cards<\/a> and devices.After this phase, they will move on to two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/trains\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"train\">train<\/a> stations.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is still unclear when they will reach the public.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I do look forward to, in the not too distant future share more about that time for rollout,&#8221; Public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/transport\" target=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"Transport\">Transport<\/a> Minister Gabrielle Williams said.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/https:\/\/prod.static9.net.au\/fs\/a35a1b10-1803-4bc5-92d5-2dc8b1ab7189.jpeg\"   alt=\"Nearly two billion Myki card trips have been released.\"\/>It remains unclear when the contactless cards will become avaliable to the public.
