{"id":24896,"date":"2025-09-16T01:43:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T01:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/24896\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T01:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T01:43:07","slug":"milk-cheese-and-butter-once-again-drive-increase-in-food-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/24896\/","title":{"rendered":"Milk, cheese, and butter once again drive increase in food prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  [&amp;_p]:tit-sub-xl tit-sub-xl md:[&amp;_p]:d-tit-sub-xl md:d-tit-sub-xl mb-[1.3rem]\">Once again higher prices for milk, cheese, and butter were the main drivers behind an increase in food prices, which rose 5% in the 12 months to August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The data, released by Stats NZ, showed the second consecutive 5% increase in annual prices, following the same figure in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2025\/08\/15\/milk-butter-and-cheese-help-drive-5-annual-food-price-increase\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">12 months to July<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The biggest contributor to the most recent increase was items in the grocery food group, which rose 4.7%, <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">&#8220;The price increase for the grocery food group was due to higher prices for milk, cheese, and butter,&#8221; Stats NZ said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">The price of two litres of milk rose 16.3% annually to $4.72. Cheese was $12.89 for a one-kilogram block, up 26.2% annually. Butter was up 31.8% annually to $8.58 per 500 grams. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">Stats NZ said the average prices for milk, cheese, and butter represented the cheapest available option for each. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cDairy products continue to be the main driver for the higher annual food prices,\u201d Stats NZ prices and deflators spokesperson Nicola Growden said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-paragraph articleLinkText  lg mb-4\">\u201cThe price of two litres of milk has increased by 88 cents since December 2023.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text-greyDarkFaded\">The morning&#8217;s headlines in 90 seconds, including a record run for Geordie Beamish at the world champs, the most expensive place to rent isn\u2019t Auckland or Wellington, and Trump might save TikTok.
