{"id":249820,"date":"2026-01-24T16:44:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T16:44:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/249820\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T16:44:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T16:44:13","slug":"northland-paramedic-violence-ambo-service-boss-warns-staff-will-leave-unsafe-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/249820\/","title":{"rendered":"Northland paramedic violence: Ambo service boss warns staff will leave unsafe jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cFamily members could be helping us, not threatening us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">The officer has worked as a paramedic for more than 20 years, mainly in Auckland and Christchurch, and said she had experienced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/letters-st-john-staff-there-to-help-they-shouldnt-be-assaulted\/premium\/VR4G5LO3Y5G5JJR6ENZJOTM55U\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/letters-st-john-staff-there-to-help-they-shouldnt-be-assaulted\/premium\/VR4G5LO3Y5G5JJR6ENZJOTM55U\/\">fewer than five threatening incidents across her entire career \u2013 until recently<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">In the past 18 months in Northland, she and her partner had faced \u201cfive quite dicey situations\u201d involving violence, threats or volatile behaviour usually fuelled by methamphetamine and alcohol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Lockie, who oversees about 300 staff across the region, echoed the concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIf my people are exposed to threats, violence, aggression, inappropriate behaviour, they are directed to leave. And if a patient dies on the floor because you\u2019ve threatened one of my people, that\u2019s on you, not my people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">One recent incident the paramedic described happened while she and her partner were stopped at an intersection when a man approached their ambulance \u201cin a threatening manner\u201d, brandishing an object and trying to get inside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe were just like, \u2018No, thank you. See you later,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo I did an awesome six-point turn and took off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Other situations were harder to escape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">At a large gathering, the patient refused care but his associates threatened the crew when they went to leave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cEveryone involved was high on meth, and backing out of the scene was pretty freaking difficult,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Another incident began as a routine medical job but turned out to be a violent domestic assault. Although the victim fled to safety, her alleged assailant suddenly claimed a medical problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cHe was unpredictable, aggressive, threatening,\u201d the paramedic said. \u201cEvery fibre of our being wanted to get out of there \u2026 but he had a medical complaint and we didn\u2019t want to leave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Eventually, his behaviour escalated to the point where the crew had to withdraw and return with police support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">The most serious case involved a critically unwell patient whose family threatened a critical\u2011care paramedic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThey reportedly said: \u2018I\u2019m going to kill you or I\u2019m going to ram you if you don\u2019t move those vehicles.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThat 100% risked the patient\u2019s life,\u201d the paramedic said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">The patient survived, but the officer described the situation as \u201cbizarre\u201d and frightening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Another time, a gravely ill patient was also extremely violent. Bystanders were furious about the ambulance delay and \u201cup in our faces\u201d, the paramedic said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Two police officers were needed to restrain the patient, adding further delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">The paramedic said ambulance staff now relied heavily on police for their safety, although police presence often riled bystanders further. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Lockie said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/crime\/k-rd-ambulance-attack-hayley-hill-sentenced-for-attacks-on-paramedic-teacher\/DUVGGU7GHZE5FNL3HFHZOJ2ZYQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/crime\/k-rd-ambulance-attack-hayley-hill-sentenced-for-attacks-on-paramedic-teacher\/DUVGGU7GHZE5FNL3HFHZOJ2ZYQ\/\">aggression towards staff was a nationwide problem,<\/a> although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/ngaruawahia-crash-ambulance-staff-attending-accident-which-killed-bikie-intimidated-and-verbally-abused\/PBU5LEM6SZHIHFEFPCCRULXQMQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/ngaruawahia-crash-ambulance-staff-attending-accident-which-killed-bikie-intimidated-and-verbally-abused\/PBU5LEM6SZHIHFEFPCCRULXQMQ\/\">particularly acute in rural regions<\/a> like Northland.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\" Hato Hone St John Northland District Operations Manager Ben Lockie. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe live in a rural and remote environment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/calls-for-hato-hone-st-john-to-be-legally-recognised-and-fully-funded-amid-growing-demand\/CFDPZEWRZBGQ5B4PB2YWWV7MP4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/northern-advocate\/news\/calls-for-hato-hone-st-john-to-be-legally-recognised-and-fully-funded-amid-growing-demand\/CFDPZEWRZBGQ5B4PB2YWWV7MP4\/\">It\u2019s not a situation where an ambulance is just around the corner<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThere\u2019s this expectation that we just appear \u2013 and that\u2019s simply not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Lockie said violence was generally but not always linked to intoxication. Another major driver in Northland was grief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cSome people process that with anger and rage, and will often take that out on ambulance staff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Lockie said the toll on staff was severe, contributing to burnout, compassion fatigue and PTSD. Abuse and violence were also affecting retention and recruitment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOur people have started to normalise these behaviours as just part of the job. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/five-injured-in-river-reserve-crash-in-hawkes-bay\/FHY2MSHOBRC37IECTRGZTNMLYY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/hawkes-bay-today\/news\/five-injured-in-river-reserve-crash-in-hawkes-bay\/FHY2MSHOBRC37IECTRGZTNMLYY\/\">Verbal abuse, spitting, having things thrown at you<\/a> \u2013 that\u2019s become fairly normalised&#8221; \u2013 leading to under-reporting of incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">The paramedic said she had \u201cnever felt as unsafe as I do up here\u201d, and that a newer colleague she worked with had already left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cShe loved the job, but she\u2019s gone to do something safer,\u201d the officer said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Lockie said the service supports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalkzb.co.nz\/on-air\/mike-hosking-breakfast\/audio\/stu-cockburn-st-john-ambulance-operations-manager-discusses-stricter-laws-on-first-responder-assault\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.newstalkzb.co.nz\/on-air\/mike-hosking-breakfast\/audio\/stu-cockburn-st-john-ambulance-operations-manager-discusses-stricter-laws-on-first-responder-assault\/\">Government\u2019s June 2025 announcement <\/a>that it would introduce new offences for assaulting first responders with intent and increase maximum prison sentences for violence against emergency workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThe public needs to understand we are here to help,\u201d Lockie said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cBut my people will walk away if they are abused \u2013 and I will back them 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"AaByrilogD\" style=\"display:none\">Sarah Curtis is a news reporter for the Northern Advocate, focusing on a wide range of issues.
