Alice in Borderland has finally ended after three seasons and cemented itself as one of Netflix’s best sci-fi series. The live-action Japanese show follows characters inspired by Alice in Wonderland — most prominently Ryōhei Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Yuzuha Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) — fighting to survive twisted games in the borderland, a realm between life and death.

Based on the bestselling manga of the same name, Alice in Borderland became an instant classic upon season 1’s 2020 release. With season 3’s debut on Netflix, the streaming platform has confirmed Alice in Borderland’s quiet cancellation, subtly announcing that the new batch of episodes was its swan song. Nevertheless, the dark thriller’s third season was a natural stopping point.

After two seasons of life-or-death games, Arisu and Usagi finally returned to the real world — only for Alice in Borderland season 3 to kick off with Usagi being sent back down the proverbial rabbit hole. Just like the first two seasons, Arisu steps up as the genius protagonist to take down a new villain, emblematic of the Joker playing card.

Yet, the Alice in Borderland ending left the door open for another season thanks to an impending, potentially fatal earthquake. Regardless, another renewal would have been unnecessary and risked Alice in Borderland dragging out beyond its shelf life.

The third and final season gave closure to most major Alice in Borderland characters, meaning another season of risking their lives in the borderland would have been gratuitous and undercut their personal development. While Arisu could have theoretically passed the baton to a new protagonist, that would have fundamentally changed the series and taken away its charm.

Plus, the visually striking motif of the deadly playing cards has been fulfilled, with the number cards reflecting the games in season 1, the face cards becoming the main antagonists of season 2, and the wildcard Joker causing chaos throughout season 3. With the full deck defeated, there was no organic point of continuation for Alice in Borderland season 4.

With episodes ranging from 41–80 minutes, however, Alice in Borderland is a commitment — and one certainly worth making.

Whether you have a morbid fascination with Alice in Borderland’s death games or are simply invested in Arisu’s heroic journey, the series is the perfect blend of high-stakes thrills and emotional twists that never feel unearned. Netflix could have prolonged Alice in Borderland, but the epic survival story ran its course, marking the end of an unforgettable era.

Alice in Borderland has finally ended after three seasons and cemented itself as one of Netflix’s best sci-fi…

[29
156,111,139,69,437
post-250478","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tv","tag-entertainment","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz","tag-tv
["GET
