People tend to frown when Luke Thompson compares \u201cBridgerton\u201d to Shakespeare.<\/p>\n
But the British actor, who leads the latest season of Netflix\u2019s blockbuster romance show and has been performing the Bard\u2019s plays for more than a decade, was resolute in an interview at a London hotel.<\/p>\n
He says in its essence, “Bridgerton” has a very Shakespearean sensibility.<\/p>\n
Thompson explains both deal in heightened reality and both have used historical settings \u2014 onscreen, Britain\u2019s Regency era; in plays like \u201cA Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream,\u201d ancient Athens \u2014 to explore contemporary concerns.<\/p>\n
He says like the string quartet playing pop hits on \u201cBridgerton,\u201d Shakespeare\u2019s writing, in its day, was much more populist, as well as accessible than today\u2019s audiences, adjusting to the iambic pentameter, often realize.<\/p>\n
The upcoming season of \u201cBridgerton\u201d seems to strengthen his argument. <\/p>\n
In this fourth installment, which comes to Netflix this Friday, Thompson\u2019s character Benedict “Bridgerton” falls for a maid pretending to be a lady at a dreamlike masked ball. <\/p>\n
Thompson\u00a0adds that comedy of meeting in disguise is also “very Shakespeare”.<\/p>\n
