Central banker Yannis Stournaras reiterated on Thursday Greece\u2019s need to see an increase in investments, pointing out that growth \u201cshould not and cannot be based only on consumption, but requires a constant strengthening of investments.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2025, according to the governor of the Bank of Greece, investments are estimated to have reached 17% of the gross domestic product, up from 11% in 2019.<\/p>\n
Investment growth rates in Greece during this period were much higher than in the European Union. However, the investment gap remains significant, as he said, since in the eurozone investments represent approximately 21% of GDP.<\/p>\n
In a speech at the Hellenic Institute of Customer Service (HICS), Stournaras noted that after the end of the Recovery and Resilience Fund (RRF), the rate of investment growth will moderate, although the so-called cliff effect is not expected, thanks to continued support from the European Union\u2019s Structural Funds, foreign direct investment, as well as domestic private investment and the Public Investment Program.<\/p>\n
Also, new European funds related to the green transition, energy upgrading and social cohesion will support economic activity in the period 2026-2032. In addition, he noted that RRF loans \u2013 although they will be fully contracted by the end of 2026 \u2013 will continue to be disbursed to businesses until 2029, keeping investment activity active.<\/p>\n
However, he characterized 2026 as a turning point, stressing that the country will be called upon to accelerate its development dynamics, while stressing that a catalyst for the transition to a more dynamic economic model is the maintenance of political stability. As he said, this \u201cis the most important intangible capital of a country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The central banker sounded a warning on the occasion of the recent geopolitical tensions, noting that if there is a slowdown in the European economy due to tariffs or a possible reduction of stock market values (especially in the US where valuations are at historically high levels), demand for Greek exports of goods and services may be limited.
