{"id":252203,"date":"2026-01-26T08:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T08:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/252203\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T08:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T08:12:10","slug":"te-araroa-residents-band-together-to-get-through-the-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/252203\/","title":{"rendered":"Te Araroa residents band together to get through the storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JU6TVX_619664886_863021359842745_1414077609349099416_n_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"A slip blocking a road near Te Araroa.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nA slip blocking a road near Te Araroa.<br \/>\nPhoto: Te Araroa Civil Defence \/ supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>Four days on from a devastating storm, pockets of wh\u0101nau remain cut off from one another on the East Coast.<\/p>\n<p>The communities were still isolated following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/584692\/warzone-east-coast-flooding-damage-comes-to-light\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">widespread flooding and slips<\/a>, with helicopters delivering supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Te Araroa &#8211; one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/584856\/weeks-of-work-ahead-to-clear-part-of-sh35-on-the-east-cape-due-to-massive-landslide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">worst-hit areas<\/a> &#8211; has just been reconnected to Gisborne via State Highway 35 to the south.<\/p>\n<p>According to local Four Square duty manager Wiremu Henare, the opening of the road &#8211; three times a day to allow convoys into the township &#8211; could not have come soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They let a truck through yesterday, so our supplies are real good at the moment. We were running low on some stuff like bread, eggs, and flour, but we are stocked up again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The store has been working alongside Civil Defence to help wh\u0101nau still cut off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We probably supply close to&#8230; 20-30 families at the moment, that&#8217;s out Horoera ways, East Cape, because they&#8217;re trapped at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a team on the ground that&#8217;s got four-wheeler buggies and they go round on low tide and supply families with groceries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said it was a beautiful part of the coast, but the entrance &#8211; surrounded by hills &#8211; was vulnerable to slips.<\/p>\n<p>They had been pulling some big shifts in the store, he said, with one half of his team still cut off in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/584833\/witness-describes-water-and-debris-everywhere-as-slip-engulfs-hicks-bay-motor-lodge\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hicks Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency management controller Ben Green said while the opening of the highway to Te Araroa was a win, it was a different story further north, with the Hicks Bay area likely to remain physically isolated for another week.<\/p>\n<p>He said about 30-odd houses in nearby Onepoto &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/national\/programmes\/morningreport\/audio\/2019020394\/parts-of-east-coast-evacuated-due-to-landslide-risks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">evacuated due to the risk of landslide over the weekend<\/a> &#8211; were yet to be given the all-clear.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4JU6TVX_621729185_864859839658897_4068365262204894171_n_jpg.jpeg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"1783\" alt=\"Hinerupe Marae - the Civil Defence base and welfare centre in Te Araroa.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nHinerupe Marae &#8211; the Civil Defence base and welfare centre in Te Araroa.<br \/>\nPhoto: Te Araroa Civil Defence \/ supplied\n<\/p>\n<p>Local Civil Defence kaimahi Trudi Ng\u0101whare said communities on the East Coast were no strangers to extreme weather, but it still took its toll.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You want to help, you want to get in there and help and do what you can, but all we could do was watch it happen &#8211; and that was horrible to be honest, and you really feel for our wh\u0101nau.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A few people woke up and&#8230; lost everything.
