{"id":252508,"date":"2026-01-26T13:56:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T13:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/252508\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T13:56:08","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T13:56:08","slug":"watch-spacex-launch-advanced-gps-satellite-for-us-space-force-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/252508\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch SpaceX launch advanced GPS satellite for US Space Force tonight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"8081f1b0-9825-41a2-8b62-6ef7d7dc216c\">SpaceX will launch an advanced GPS satellite for the U.S. Space Force from Florida tonight (Jan. 26), and you can watch the action live.<\/p>\n<p>A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket carrying the GPS III-SV09 spacecraft is scheduled to lift off from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Canaveral Space Force Station<\/a> tonight, during a 15-minute window that opens at 11:46 p.m. EST (0446 GMT on Jan. 27).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"8081f1b0-9825-41a2-8b62-6ef7d7dc216c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">You can watch it live via <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/gpsiii9\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/gpsiii9\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SpaceX&#8217;s website<\/a> or X account. Coverage will begin about 10 minutes before launch.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"acfea31b-9894-405a-a918-faa686b3e326\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/gps-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GPS<\/a> III satellites are built by aerospace giant Lockheed Martin and feature &#8220;M-Code&#8221; technology, which makes them more resistant to jamming than their predecessors, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/us-space-force-history-mission-capabilities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Force<\/a> officials.<\/p>\n<p>The first GPS III vehicle lifted off in December 2018. As its name suggests, GPS III-SV09 will be the ninth, out of a planned total of 10, to reach orbit. The final one in the series is expected to go up later this year.<\/p>\n<p>GPS III-SV09 was originally booked to fly on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/vulcan-centaur-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vulcan Centaur<\/a>, United Launch Alliance&#8217;s powerful new rocket. But the Space Force changed that plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For this launch, we traded a GPS III mission from a Vulcan to a Falcon 9, then exchanged a later GPS IIIF mission from a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39779-falcon-heavy-facts.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon Heavy<\/a> to a Vulcan,&#8221; U.S. Space Force Col. Ryan Hiserote, SYD 80 Commander and National Security Space Launch program manager, said in an emailed statement on Jan. 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our commitment to keeping things flexible \u2014 programmatically and contractually \u2014 means that we can pivot when necessary to changing circumstances,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We have a proven ability to adapt the launch manifest to complex and dynamic factors and are continuing to shorten our timelines for delivering critical capabilities to warfighters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>GPS IIIF, by the way, is the next iteration of satellites the U.S. will use for positioning, navigation and timing. Ellison Onizuka, one of the seven NASA astronauts who died in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18084-space-shuttle-challenger.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18084-space-shuttle-challenger.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18084-space-shuttle-challenger.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space shuttle Challenger<\/a> accident on Jan. 28, 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Other former astronauts have been so honored as well. For example, GPS III-SV05 was named after <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16758-apollo-11-first-moon-landing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apollo 11<\/a> moonwalker <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15519-neil-armstrong-man-moon.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15519-neil-armstrong-man-moon.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15519-neil-armstrong-man-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil Armstrong,<\/a> and GPS III-SV07 carries the moniker &#8220;<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16756-sally-ride-biography.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16756-sally-ride-biography.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16756-sally-ride-biography.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sally Ride<\/a>,&#8221; after the first American woman to reach space.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s flight will be the fifth for this particular Falcon 9&#8217;s first stage.
